DailyFaceoff Morning Report — 02/15/22

The DailyFaceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.

We will highlight injuries that will affect today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.

Tyler Toffoli traded to Flames

The Calgary Flames Acquired Tyler Toffoli from the Montreal Canadiens for Emil Heinemann, Tyler Pitlick, a 2022 first-round pick, and a 2024 fifth-round pick. Chris Gear breaks the trade down here.

Kane returns to San Jose in 3-0 win for the Oilers

Evander Kane was held off the scoresheet in his return to San Jose but his lack of presence on the scoreboard didn’t stop the home fans from greeting him.

Stuart Skinner only had to face 12 shots through the first two periods on his way to an eventual 20 save shutout. It was the first shutout of the season for the Oilers. That leaves the Buffalo Sabres and Dallas Stars as the only two teams yet to record a shutout this season.

Boldy headlines battle of rookies in Minnesota

Matt Boldy scored his first career hat-trick and added an assist in a high-event 7-4 win for the Wild over the Red Wings. The rookie now has 14 points (7G / 7A) and already ranks top 20 in rookie scoring despite having played in only 13 games this season. Boldy was recommended in our weekly fantasy hockey streaming targets.

Red Wings rookie Moritz Seider continues to impress this season. He recorded two assists in the loss and has 34 points (5G / 29A) in 50 games, trailing only teammate Lucas Raymond’s 39 points (13G / 26A).

Boldy probably won’t receive the same kind of Calder consideration as the two Red Wings players but it will be interesting to see how far he can climb up the rookie scoring list if he can continue his torrid pace.

Leafs defeat Kraken 6-2

Mitch Marner hit a milestone on Monday night, recording his 400th career point in his 392nd career game. Marner scored a goal and two assists in the game, including a beautiful assist on a short-handed goal by Kampf in the third period. Marner is playing with a ton of confidence right now and leads the league in points since January 15th with 22 (11G / 12A).

Jets continue to slide

The Winnipeg Jets didn’t do themselves any favours in their push to get back into the playoff picture with a 3-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night. The Jets fell to 4-7-3 in their last 14 games and are seven points back of the final Wild Card spot.

January 9, 2020, was the last time a goalie scored when Pekka Rinne did it in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks. Marc-Andre Fleury made an attempt at the empty net on Monday night but came up just short. Scoring a goal is about the only thing Fleury has yet to accomplish in his Hall of Fame career.
