DailyFaceoff Morning Report — 02/17/22

Panthers score in the final minute to tie; win in OT
In another instance of bizarre scheduling by the NHL this season, the Florida Panthers played their first game in over two weeks but didn’t miss a beat in a 3-2 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi has only scored in one of his last 14 games. He came close to adding to his totals on Wednesday, but Lucas Carlsson made an incredible save to keep him at nine goals on the season.

Aleksander Barkov scored a beautiful highlight-reel goal and showed once again why he is one of the best all-around players in the league.

Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler had four-point games to continue their hot play of late. Scheifele scored a hat-trick and added an assist to give him 10 points (6G / 4A) in his last four games, while Wheeler’s four assists give him nine points (2G / 7A) in his last three.
With the win, the Jets moved within five points of the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. It was only their fourth win in their last 13 games (4-6-3).
Flames can’t stop scoring
The Pacific Division-leading Calgary Flames defeated the Anaheim Ducks 6-2, giving them their eighth win in a row. The Flames have scored at least five goals in each of their last five games and dating back to January 18th, have scored more than any other team in the league (56 goals in 13 games).
The Ducks have lost 16 of their last 22 games (6-10-6) and now find themselves outside of a playoff spot after having held one for the majority of the first half.
Kuemper spoils Eichel’s debut in 2-0 win for the Avs
Jack Eichel played his first game since March 7th of last year, making his much-anticipated debut for the Vegas Golden Knights.

Darcy Kuemper now has shutouts in back-to-back games and has really turned his season around. In his first 16 games, Kuemper had the lowest save percentage (.902 SV%) of any goalie with a winning record (Min. 10 games played). In 17 games since, he has the third-highest save percentage (.936 SV%) under the same parameters.
Canada wins fifth Olympic gold medal in win over USA
Canada’s women took home Gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics with a 3-2 win over the United States. Our Chris Peters has a full breakdown and analysis of the game.
