A journeyman has found a new home in the Lone Star State.

According to reports, the Dallas Stars have signed forward David Perron to a one-year contract. The deal carries a prorated cap hit of $850,000 for the 2026-27 season.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the signing.

When the new season began, the 38-year-old remained unsigned. However, in the opening weeks of the campaign, the Stars realized they could utilize the tools the 20-year NHLer possesses.

Perron moves to Dallas hoping to produce a little bit more and stay healthier than he has in the past couple of seasons. After an impressive stretch in which he posted at least 45 points eight years in a row, the Stanley Cup champion posted only 16 points in 43 games with the Ottawa Senators in 2024-25, improving only slightly to 28 points in 65 appearances last year. He started last season with the Sens before the trade deadline, when he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings, though he did little to better the Original Six team’s postseason chances, scoring just three goals in 16 contests.

The Sherbrooke, Que. native has made his way around the NHL over his long career. After starting off with the St. Louis Blues, the team that took him in the first round of the 2007 NHL Draft, he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in the summer of 2013. He was then dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the middle of the 20214-15 campaign, but was on the move the following season, as he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks. He rejoined the Blues as a free agent in July 2016, but the Vegas Golden Knights claimed him in the expansion draft a year later. After one season in Sin City, he returned to the Blues and helped the franchise win its first Cup. After a few more seasons in St. Louis, he signed with the Wings in 2022, played two years in Hockeytown, and became a Senator through free agency in July 2024.

In 1,239 regular-season games in the NHL, Perron has posted 332 goals and 480 assists for 812 points, with another 64 points in 110 postseason contests.

The Stars are hoping Perron can give the squad a little jump. While the team certainly hasn’t been bad, going just 3-3-1 through the first seven games of the campaign is less than ideal for a team that finished second in the Western Conference last season. Dallas has also scored just 16 goals thus far.
