Red Wings’ Patrick Kane to miss next two games with upper-body injury

An important veteran in Hockeytown remains out of action.
When speaking to the media on Tuesday, Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan revealed that forward Patrick Kane will not be on the team’s trip to New York this week after suffering an upper-body injury this past weekend.
McLellan stated that Kane will be reevaluated before the Red Wings return home to face the St. Louis Blues this coming Saturday.
Per Coach McLellan, Patrick Kane will not make the trip to Buffalo, will be reevaluated ahead of Saturday’s game at home.
— Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) October 21, 2025Kane was injured during Detroit’s game last Friday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was hurt late in the game after crashing into the boards. The Wings still went on to win the game, 2-1, in overtime.
The 36-year-old missed this past Sunday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers as well, though Detroit didn’t seem to mind, beating Connor McDavid and company by a final score of 4-2. With Kane out, McLellan tossed rookie Michael Brandsegg-Nygård on the second line alongside Marco Kasper and Alex DeBrincat.
Kane’s absence on the trip means he will be out of action for the Red Wings’ back-to-back in Empire State, as they are set to visit the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night, before taking on the New York Islanders on Thursday. They are the team’s first two road games in over a week.
The Buffalo native has had a solid start to the 2025-26 season. He scored two goals and three assists for five points in the first four games of the season, including scoring the game-winning goal in a win over the Florida Panthers last Wednesday. His best game of the season came against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 11, where the three-time Stanley Cup champion registered three points in a 6-3 victory.
Kane is on another one-year contract with the Wings, agreeing to a $3 million deal this past June.
