Five NHL players placed on waivers for Oct. 7

A couple of veteran netminders are on the wire.
On Tuesday, the Buffalo Sabres placed goaltender Alexandar Georgiev on waivers, with the Anaheim Ducks doing the same with Ville Husso. Also, Kevin Rooney (Utah Mammoth), Juha Jaaska (Carolina Hurricanes) and Jeremy Davies (Vegas Golden Knights) were also put on the wire.
Georgiev signed a one-year contract with the Sabres last month. It came as the team was dealing with fellow netminder Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s health, as he had been hurt during the offseason. While the team had signed Alex Lyon as well, it looked like Georgiev would make the opening night roster after Luukkonen was hurt during a preseason game last week, placing him on the injured list.
However, that changed when the Sabres picked up goaltender Colton Ellis off waivers. Head coach Lindy Ruff stated on Tuesday that the team had been keeping an eye on the former St. Louis Blues backstop for some time.
Lindy said Georgiev is going on waivers. Team had targeted Ellis for a while in case he became available. #Sabres
— Mike Harrington (@ByMHarrington) October 7, 2025Last season, Georgiev came to the conclusion of his three-year contract, which he signed with the Colorado Avalanche in July 2022. The deal had a cap hit of $3.4 million. Georgiev had been traded by the Avs to the San Jose Sharks as part of the deal that sent Mackenzie Blackwood to Colorado last December.
It was part of a truly disappointing 2024-25 campaign for the Bulgarian netminder. In 49 games with the Avalanche and Sharks, he posted a record of 15-26-4, with a 3.71 goals-against average and .875 save percentage. They were, by far, the worst numbers of his eight-year NHL career.
It was just a few years ago when Georgiev won 40 games with Colorado. However, his game has declined to the point where even the team he just signed with no longer needs him on its roster.
In 303 NHL games, Georgiev has a record of 151-108-26, with a 2.99 GAA, a .903 SV% and 15 shutouts. He has a postseason record of 9-10, with a 2.72 GAA and a .906 SV%.
Husso had been with the Ducks since he was traded by the Detroit Red Wings for future considerations last February. He went 1-1-1 with a 2.99 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage in his four games with the team. In total, he appeared in 13 games during the 2024-25 campaign, going 2-7-3 with a 3.47 GAA and a .890 SV%. He spent most of the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings’ American Hockey League affiliate.
Husso signed a two-year contract extension with Anaheim and was expected to be in the running to make the opening night roster. However, even though he initially was listed on the roster, it seems that the team has elected to go with Lukas Dostal and Petr Mrazek to start the new year.
In 145 NHL appearances, Husso has a record of 71-46-19, with a 3.05 GAA, a .901 SV% and seven shutouts.
