Logan Cooley is betting on himself after turning down eight-year extension

Logan Coolley is one of the brightest young stars in the NHL, but he’s betting on himself when it comes to his future contract, reportedly turning down an eight-year extension with the Utah Mammoth.
According to Frank Serravalli, the deal would have seen him earn an AAV of $9.6 million through the end of the 2033-34 campaign. Instead, he will head into the season in the final year of his three-year entry-level contract, with hopes that he can earn a more significant contract for 2024-25 and beyond.
On Monday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton broke down his approach, and the trend of young players betting on themselves.
Yaremchuk: The Utah mammoth are trying to get to the finish line with Logan Cooley and reportedly offered him a $77 million deal and eight year contract. Cooley turned it down, thinking that if he has a big year, he could be somewhere in the $11 million AAV range. It takes some guts to turn down $77 million guaranteed.
Hutton: This is what we talked about and we touched on it last week. I’ve been shouting from the rooftops that these kids are a different generation of player, right, where the term is out the window.
The way that cap is going up, these guys want short term, or they want to exceed that money, so I give them credit, because I was the opposite – I was thinking long term and just thinking top dollar as much as I could make, and giving myself a seat at the table.
A lot of these guys are in a different position now, but that being said, I love Logan Cooley. He’s a great player and I think his upside is there, and he’s betting on himself, and he’s betting on Utah to have a good year too.
