Through 19 games this season, Kempe has six goals and 19 points, and is on pace for his third straight 70-plus point campaign. Through 10 NHL seasons, the 2014 first-round pick has 200 goals and 220 assists for 420 points in 649 career regular-season games.
On Monday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton to discuss Kempe’s new deal and if it’s an overpayment on the Kings’ behalf.
Tyler Yaremchuk: I saw debates on Twitter about if this is going to be worse than the Jonathan Huberdeau deal. When Huberdeau signed his extension, he got traded. I saw some pushback to it, but when Huberdeau was with the Florida Panthers, he was coming off a 115-point season, and was a point-per-game player in the years before that.
Kempe has never had a 115-point season. I guess the argument is that he’s staying in L.A., so he’s around familiar surroundings. I don’t know, I feel like paying a 29-year-old winger for eight years at this price tag … I think it makes me a little nervous. I think it’s a touch high on the AAV side.
Carter Hutton: I guess my only concern is, where else do you get somebody? When I see how teams are spending, I look at the free agency class coming up this summer, I do feel like the guys who can hold out and get there are really going to get paid. The fact that there’s going to be borderline teams who had a good season and assessing what they need, they’ll think “Maybe a 30- or 40-goal scorer will push us over the top.”
I guess time will tell, but I’m with you. I think five or six years into this deal, it will be a big-time overpay.
