The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Steven Lorentz to a three-year contract extension worth $1.35 million per season.

Lorentz joined the Maple Leafs last season, scoring eight goals and 19 points. A lifelong Leafs fan, Lorentz served as a physical threat deeper down in the lineup. The 6-foot-4, 216-pound forward has 62 career points in 310 career regular season games.

The biggest highlight of his career, though, had to be the 2014 Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers. Lorentz had three points in 16 games, giving the Panthers some aggressive depth around the crease.

This will mark the first time Lorentz has stayed with a team for consecutive seasons since spending 2020-21 and 2021-22 with the Carolina Hurricanes. Prior to making his NHL debut, Lorentz went on to register 55 points in 93 games over three years with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers.

The Hurricanes initially drafted Lorentz with the 186th pick in 2015. From there, he would continue to build a name for himself with the AHL’s Peterborough Petes before making his pro debut with the ECHL’s Florida Everblades in 2017.

It was a busy afternoon for the Maple Leafs, who traded Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights and acquired Matias Maccelli from Utah.

Max Pacioretty, Jani Hakanpaa, Alex Nylander, Nick Abruzzese, Alex Steeves, Dakota Mermis, Nicolas Mattinen and Matt Murray are the team’s pending UFAs heading into July 1. On the RFA front, Pontus Holmberg and Nicolas Robertson are still in need of new contracts.
