Canadiens’ Alex Newhook out four months; Kaiden Guhle out 8-10 weeks

A couple of important players in la belle province will be out for a substantial amount of time.
On Friday, the Montreal Canadiens announced that forward Alex Newhook underwent surgery to repair a fractured ankle and is expected to miss four months. Also, defenseman Kaiden Guhle had surgery for a partially torn adductor muscle and is projected to be out 8-10 weeks.

Newhook suffered the scary injury on Thursday night against the Dallas Stars. When chasing a loose puck into the Stars’ zone with Dallas defenseman Ilya Lybushkin, the 24-year-old became entangled, losing his footing before crashing hard into the endboards, with his right ankle awkwardly getting twisted underneath him. Newhook had to be helped off the ice by his teammates, putting no weight on his right leg.
In the first 17 games of the season, Newhook has scored six goals and six assists for 12 points, good for fifth on the team in scoring. He has been a key part of the Habs’ strong start to the season, as the team is near the top of the Atlantic Division.
Guhle has had a rough start to his 2025-26 campaign. A groin injury hindered him during training camp, only to be placed back on the shelf after playing five games at the start of the regular season. He last appeared in Montreal’s lineup on Oct. 16. The 23-year-old had scored a goal and an assist thus far.
The injury woes plagued the Edmonton native last season as well. He needed surgery to fix his quadricep muscle, keeping him out of action for almost two months. Guhle was limited to 55 games, scoring six goals and 12 assists for 18 points. He managed to remain in the lineup for the Habs’ first-round series against the Washington Capitals last spring.
The Canadiens (10-5-2) return to action on Saturday night against the rival Boston Bruins.
