New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe announced Wednesday that goaltender Jacob Markstrom will be out several weeks with a lower-body injury.

The news comes after the team recalled goaltender Nico Daws from their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets. They also announced that forward Zack MacEwen has been placed on Injured Reserve (IR) with an upper-body injury.

Markstrom appeared injured while coming off the ice following the Devils’ 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday. He took over for Jake Allen, who started the game but left with what the team called cramping.

Markstrom went 26-16-6 with a .900 save percentage (SV%) and 2.50 goals against average (GAA) in 49 games in 2024-25. Through 16 NHL seasons, Markstrom, a Gavle, Sweden native, has a 243-213-63 record with a .908 SV% and 2.71 GAA.

Daws, 24, has appeared in one AHL game this season, posting a 0-1-0 record and allowing one goal on 27 shots. In 2024-25, he went 11-20-2 with an .893 SV% and 3.16 (GAA) in 34 games. He also appeared in six games with the Devils, going 3-1-0 with a .939 SV% and 1.60 GAA.

In 52 career NHL games, Daws has a 22-23-1 record, an .898 SV% and 2.98 GAA. Meanwhile, in 99 career AHL regular-season games, he’s posted a 43-45-10 record with a .902 SV% and 2.83 GAA.

The MacEwen news comes after head coach Sheldon Keefe said Monday he would be out for a “considerable amount of time,” according to team reporter Amanda Stein.
