The National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced Monday that New York Islanders’ forward Mathew Barzal has been fined $5,000 for slashing Columbus Blue Jackets’ forward Mason Marchment during their game on Sunday.

The incident occurred early in the second period after Marchment delivered a hit on Islanders’ defenseman Matthew Schaefer. Barzal then skated towards Marchment and took a swing at his ankle, with Marchment falling to the ice and Barzal getting in a scrum with other Columbus players.

Marchment received a two-minute minor for tripping, while Barzal received a game misconduct, receiving 17 penalty minutes.

Barzal has 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points in 38 games this season. Through 568 games, the 2015 first-round pick has 144 goals and 347 assists for 491 points.

As for Marchment, he now has seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points in 32 games with the Blue Jackets and Seattle Kraken. He was acquired by Columbus in a trade earlier this month. In 334 career games, Marchment has 83 goals and 123 assists for 206 points.

The Islanders are 21-14-4 with 46 points, second in the Metropolitan Division and fifth in the Eastern Conference. Bo Horvat leads the team in goals and points with 20 and 32, respectively.

As for the Blue Jackets, they’re 16-15-6 with 38 points, last in the Metro and East. However, they are only four points back of a wild-card spot. Zach Werenski leads the team in all offensive categories with 14 goals and 26 assists for 40 points.
