Islanders’ Pierre Engvall undergoes ankle surgery, will miss rest of 2025-26

The injury woes for a veteran on Long Island have cost him a season.
On Wednesday, the New York Islanders announced that forward Pierre Engvall underwent successful ankle surgery on Tuesday, but he will remain out of action for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.
#Isles players updates:
– Pierre Engvall had successful ankle surgery yesterday. He will be out for the rest of the season.
– Semyon Varlamov is skating and still progressing.
Engvall hasn’t played a game this year, as he has been recovering from offseason hip surgery, as well. It came after a tumultuous 2024-25 season, during which the Swedish winger started the year in the minors after being put on waivers. He was up and down between the Islanders and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders, for the first half of the season.
Engvall remained with the big club from mid-December onward, but was a healthy scratch for a few games. He appeared in just 62 games, the fewest number of appearances in an NHL season in a normal season. Engvall potted eight goals and seven assists for 15 points, with a plus/minus of -15 while registering 11:49 of ice time.
The struggles for Engvall come at a very tough time for him and the Islanders. The team is in the midst of trying to stay competitive in the Metropolitan Division, while Engvall can’t maintain the level of consistency that led to the Isles signing him to a seven-year, $21 million contract in July 2023. After this year, Engvall has four more years remaining on the deal, which includes a modified no-trade clause that requires the player to submit a 16-team no-trade list.
In 380 NHL regular-season games, which included parts of four seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Engvall has scored 65 goals and 70 assists for 135 points, with another eight points in 28 postseason games.
In other team news, goaltender Semyon Varlamov is skating and is progressing toward a return to the lineup. Sticking with netminders, the team has relieved goaltending coach Piero Greco of his duties, with Sergei Naumovs stepping in and taking over the role.
The Islanders (3-3-0) are set to host the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.
