Rangers hire Quick, Brassard to staff
The New York Rangers are adding a couple of former players to their player development staff.
On Tuesday, Mollie Walker of the New York Post reported that the Rangers are hiring former goaltender Jonathan Quick to be the team’s new director of goaltending development.
Vince Z. Mercogliano has also reported that former Rangers forward Derick Brassard will be joining the organization as a player development assistant.
According to Walker, Quick will be in charge of developing the goaltenders for the Rangers, including the goaltenders for New York’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Hartford Wolf Pack and any other goaltenders within the Rangers’ organization. Quick and Brassard will report to Tanner Glass, New York’s director of player development.
Quick, 40, retired from the NHL at the conclusion of last season, in which he went 6-17-2 with a .891 save percentage and a 3.09 goals-against average in 24 starts for the Rangers.
The Milford, Connecticut native, who grew up rooting for the Blueshirts, is one the greatest American-born goaltenders of all-time, and is probably the best big-game goalie of his generation.
Selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the third round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Quick spent his first 14-plus NHL seasons in Los Angeles. Having already established himself as a high-end starter over his first few seasons, Quick ascended into all-time elite status in 2011-12, when he posted a 35-21-13 record with a .929 SV% and a 1.95 GAA in 69 starts. That postseason, he went 16-4 in 20 starts with a .946 SV% and a 1.41 GAA en route to winning the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. He won his second Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2014.
After a brief stretch with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023 after getting dealt at that year’s trade deadline, Quick spent the final three years of career with the Rangers.
His 410 career wins is the most all-time among American-born goaltenders.
Brassard, 38, has not played in the NHL since the 2022-23 season, when he had 23 points in 62 games for the Ottawa Senators. The Hull, Quebec native had a 16-year NHL career, including a stretch of three-plus season for the Rangers from 2013 until 2016, during which time he played the best hockey of his career and played a key role on New York’s 2014 Stanley Cup final team.
