A veteran netminder is set to get his wheels under him once again.

On Wednesday, the New York Rangers announced that goaltender Joonas Korpisalo has been assigned to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, on a conditioning assignment.

Per NHL rules, a conditioning stint can last no longer than 14 days. The reason Korpisalo is heading back to the minors is to get in shape after missing a considerable amount of time. The 32-year-old suffered a lower-body injury in the opening days of the 2026-27 season, leading to him being placed on injured reserve. It still isn’t clear when or where Korpisalo suffered the injury. He backed up Igor Shesterkin for the team’s season opener last month. He did appear in one preseason game for the Blueshirts, making 20 saves in a shootout win over the New Jersey Devils.

Korpisalo came to Broadway over the summer, as the Boston Bruins traded the Finnish backstop to the Blueshirts for prospect Kalle Vaisanen and a fourth-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft. Korpisalo had spent the past two seasons with the Bruins, mainly serving as a backup to Jeremy Swayman. In 2025-26, he posted a record of 14-9-6, with a 3.15 goals-against average, a .894 save percentage and one shutout.

In 334 regular-season appearances in his NHL career, Korpisalo is 140-126-38, with a 3.06 GAA, a .900 SV% and eight shutouts. He’s in the fourth season of a five-year contract, which he signed with the Ottawa Senators in July 2023.

The Wolf Pack are on the road on Wednesday night, facing off against the Washington Capitals‘ top farm team, the Hershey Bears. Hartford is in the midst of a five-game road trip, which wraps up next Tuesday against the Springfield Falcons.
