Sirens’ Cherkowski out day-to-day, Knowles signed to 10-day contract

A talented rookie is coming to miss some time.
The New York Sirens announced that forward Anne Cherkowski is out day-to-day, with the Coldstream, B.C., native being held out of Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Frost due to illness. In response, the team has activated defender Olivia Knowles from its reserve list, signing her to a 10-day contract.
Knowles is expected to be in the lineup against the two-time defending Walter Cup champions, and could be in the lineup for the Sirens’ final game before the Olympic break on Wednesday against the league-leading Boston Fleet. Per the terms of the short-term deal, she could also play in New York’s first game after the break on Feb. 26 against the Montreal Victoire.
Knowles has dressed in one game so far this weekend, coming back on New Year’s Eve in a win over the Vancouver Goldeneyes. She was on a standard contract while rookie Dayle Ross was on long-term injured reserve. The Campbell River, B.C. native appeared in 12 games last year with the Sirens, but hasn’t registered a point since her lone PWHL assist during the league’s inaugural season while with Toronto.
Cherkowski has slowly been starting to find her groove in her first season in the league. The Sirens’ second-round pick in this year’s draft had scored in each of the team’s past two games, including the team’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Ottawa Charge last Tuesday.
The former Clarkson star has potted a pair of four assists in six points, with a plus/minus of -5 while averaging around 18:30 of ice time per game. She’s part of a strong young core in New York that includes reigning rookie of the year Sarah Fillier, Casey O’Brien and Kristýna Kaltounková.
Coming into Sunday’s slate, the Sirens (7-0-2-5) sit third in the PWHL, three points back of the Fleet for first place.
