With Hunter Crowther

There’s something nice about the last month of the NHL regular season.

With the trade deadline gone, hockey fans can stop worrying about the off-ice distractions (at least, transactionally), and focus on the on-ice product as the playoff races come down to single points. Sure, teams can still fire their coach, but who would be crazy enough to do that?

Oh. Dammit, Vegas.

Hunter and I navigate through the season with another year of our co-op power rankings. I have my same old system in which I aggregate six stats (points %, 5v5 goal differential, 5v5 xGF/60, 5v5 xGA/60, power play xGF/60, and shorthanded xGA/60, all coming courtesy of Natural Stat Trick) to come up with a list that eliminates my own biases, along with a rule that no team can be above a team that’s more than five points ahead of them in the standings, regardless of where the aggregate places them. Additionally, with teams now beginning to clinch playoff spots, no team that has clinched can finish behind a team that hasn’t. On the other hand, Hunter goes off his own intellect and pure vibes, and together we find a way to combine it and meet in the middle.

1. Colorado Avalanche

Record: 46-21-6, +85
Last Week: 1st (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 1st
Scott’s Rank: 1st

Scott: It was another solid week for the Avalanche, as they stretched their winning streak to four games (really minuscule by the standards they’ve set this season) with two more wins over the Penguins and Jets before dropping the home leg of the home-and-home with Winnipeg on Saturday. They’ve pulled a six-point gap on the Stars for the Presidents’ Trophy, and it’s beginning to feel safe for them, but there’s still some time left to slip up. Meanwhile, MacKinnon is two away from 50 goals, and while his lead on the Rocket Richard isn’t quite as comfy (more on that in a second), it’s been another great season for the Nate Dog.

2. Dallas Stars

Record: 44-18-12, +49
Last Week: 2nd (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 4th
Scott’s Rank: 2nd

Scott: Remember when the Stars were within reach of first in the league, and potentially overtaking the Avalanche to give themselves an easier first-round matchup? They’ve since lost six of eight games and are back to where they started. As I said with the Avalanche, there’s still a chance they could sneak back into that race, but they’ll need to return to their 14-0-1 form to truly pull that off.

Hunter: I’m not too worried about the Stars’ recent losing streak, and unless they pull off a streak like one Scott just mentioned, they’ll be preparing for their first-round matchup against the Wild. Meanwhile, they’ll face the Avs in a Saturday matinee this weekend.

3. Tampa Bay Lightning

Record: 46-21-6, +64
Last Week: 4th (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 2nd
Scott’s Rank: 4th

Hunter: Tampa started the week with a commanding win over Minnesota, then followed an overtime loss to the Kraken with wins over the Senators and Predators, putting them back in the top spot in the Atlantic Division with a game in hand on the Sabres. The Lightning will face Buffalo next Monday, but before then, they will take on the Canadiens, Penguins, and Bruins — each of which could be their first-round matchup.

4. Carolina Hurricanes

Record: 46-21-6, +42
Last Week: 3rd (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 3rd
Scott’s Rank: 3rd

Scott: The Hurricanes’ goaltending continues to be a fascinating narrative as we edge closer to the playoffs. Brandon Bussi looked like the runaway candidate as the starter for Carolina, but he’s now failed to surpass a .900 save percentage in 10 of 11 games, and only played in one of the Canes’ past four games, a back-to-back. Andersen hasn’t been much better either, as he had save percentages of .778 and .833 in his two games last week. Since Bussi’s struggles, Andersen has at least been solid with a 1.17 5v5 goals saved above expected, but I’m not confident about their chances in the playoffs right now.

5. Minnesota Wild

Record: 41-21-12, +26
Last Week: 6th (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 5th
Scott’s Rank: 5th

Hunter: If I may follow up on my friend Scott’s blurb on the Wild last week, the Wild have been one of hockey’s best teams recently. They’re a shade below the Hurricanes for the best expected goals percentage in the last 10 games and remain in the three-spot in the Central Division. The only problem? They haven’t won two games in a row since early March and Filip Gustavsson can’t stop giving up goals. Other than that, everything is fine!

6. Buffalo Sabres

Record: 45-21-8, +41
Last Week: 5th (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 6th
Scott’s Rank: 6th

Hunter: The bad: The Sabres lost two of three games last week, including a late blown lead to the Bruins and a 5-2 shellacking to the Red Wings. The good? They earned three of six points and are right there with the Lightning at the top of the Atlantic. Tage Thompson is just three goals away from his third 40-goal season, while Rasmus Dahlin has 67 points and is seven points away from setting a new career high.

7. Montreal Canadiens

Record: 42-21-10, +25
Last Week: 9th (+2)
Hunter’s Rank: 7th
Scott’s Rank: 7th

Scott: Remember when Cole Caufield scoring 50 goals seemed like a long shot? Well, he has nine goals in his last nine games and 25 in his last 25 games, a run that feels like we haven’t seen since Auston Matthews in his 69-goal campaign. He’s now not only four goals from scoring 50, but he’s also two away from MacKinnon for the Rocket Richard.

The Canadiens have taken advantage of this and won five games in a row, although, because of how hot the other teams around them have been, it hasn’t really moved them one way or the other in the Atlantic Division. From a Leafs fan:

8. Pittsburgh Penguins

Record: 36-21-16, +16
Last Week: 7th (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 9th
Scott’s Rank: 8th

Scott: There’s been a lot of fun stories with this Penguins team. Sidney Crosby is Sidney Crosby. Evgeni Malkin returned to form in what could be his last season. Ben Kindel’s underrated performance as a rookie. Stuart Skinner is making the Oilers look bad. But one story that not enough people are talking about is how amazing Erik Karlsson has been this season. He’s playing arguably his best hockey since he dragged the Senators to the Conference Finals in 2017 (before losing to the Pens), and is another example of the impact Dan Muse has had on this team. It’s been so good that the Penguins have decided they aren’t moving Karlsson, at least this summer. Not a horrible idea, especially since he’s playing up to his contract, but it wouldn’t be the worst idea to sell high on him, either.

Hunter: Wow, showing NO respect for his 101-point, Norris Trophy-winning 2022-23 campaign. I know the team itself wasn’t great, but Karlsson was head and shoulders above everyone else on that roster. It’s a shame those San Jose seasons never produced anything in the postseason.

But I’m glad you’re giving him some well-deserved love: I’ve watched plenty of Pens games this season, mostly to watch as much of Crosby as I can before he hangs them up, but it’s Karlsson’s resurgence that’s been impressive, especially in the second half of the season. Hopefully, Crosby and co. are healthy enough for the postseason. I’d like to see at least one playoff series with this group.

Scott: Yeah, but that Karlsson was throwing defense to the wind to get points, this one is at least putting together a respectable two-way game.

9. Ottawa Senators

Record: 38-25-10, +20
Last Week: 8th (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 8th
Scott’s Rank: 11th

Hunter: The Senators are two points back of a Wildcard spot after earning five of a possible eight points last week. Linus Ullmark stepped up last week, with a 33-save win over the Red Wings, but perhaps his best effort came in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Penguins last week, stopping 37 of 40. James Reimer has held his own in a backup role, but he gave up four in a losing effort to Tampa over the weekend. If Ottawa wants to clinch a playoff berth, Ullmark will need to be lights out.

10. Boston Bruins

Record: 42-24-8, +20
Last Week: 12th (+2)
Hunter’s Rank: 10th
Scott’s Rank: 10th

Hunter: Yeah, they’re going to do it. The Bruins have wins in five of their last six, including victories last week against the Sabres and Wild. Jeremy Swayman is 7-2-1 in his last 10 games, posting a .929 SV%, as well as a league-leading 11.8 GSAx in that span. They’re near the bottom in a lot of advanced metrics, but anything can happen in a seven-game series.

Scott: At this point, I’ve resigned to the fact they’re going to win the Stanley Cup somehow. It defies all logic, but so has this team, and the fact that THEY WON’T DIE! And of course, the one loss in their last six games came against Toronto, because they just had to help their chances of getting a top-10 pick out of this season.

11. Columbus Blue Jackets

Record: 38-24-12, +11
Last Week: 10th (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 12th
Scott’s Rank: 9th

Hunter: Don’t do this to me, Columbus. You’ve come this far, climbing from the very bottom of the NHL standings to fighting for a Wildcard berth. Going into this week, they’re clinging onto the No. 2 spot, but losses in four of their last five have kept several teams in the hunt. Jet Greaves and Elvis Merzlikins have held up their end of the bargain; it’s time for the offense to do the same.

12. Detroit Red Wings

Record: 39-26-8, -3
Last Week: 11th (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 11th
Scott’s Rank: 13th

Scott: The Red Wings are in another stretch of average hockey. They’ve lost three of their last four games, with all three losses being the games they NEEDED to win. While they did beat the Sabres on Friday, Detroit isn’t catching up to them, and losing to the Bruins, Senators and Flyers may be the kind of stretch you look back on if you miss the playoffs. They’re two points out of the playoffs with a game in hand, so it’s not over, but they can’t be dropping points anymore, especially in these four-point swing games.

Shoutout to Alex DeBrincat as well; he’s come to play in this final stretch for the playoffs. Since the Olympic break, he’s had points in 13 of 15 games and has 21 points in total. Otherwise, Moritz Seider (15), Patrick Kane (14), and Lucas Raymond (11) are the only players with more than SIX POINTS in that stretch (although Dylan Larkin at least has six points in eight games).

Hunter: I repeat: I’m so, so, so sorry, Hockeytown

Scott: I completely forgot about that. I would, uh, hire a personal security team if I were you, Hunter. And hopefully you’re certain statement on the Bruins carries a similar fate.

13. Anaheim Ducks

Record: 41-28-4, -6
Last Week: 13th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 13th
Scott’s Rank: 14th

Hunter: I’ll be honest, I’ve thought the Ducks were going to blow their Pacific Division lead for most of the 2025-26 season. But I didn’t account for the rest of the Pacific Division to be this bad. They earned wins in two of three games last week and now have victories in four of their last five. But their loss to the Oilers should serve as a reminder that to be the (Western Conference) champs, you gotta BEAT the (Western Conference) champs!

14. New York Islanders

Record: 42-27-5, +7
Last Week: 15th (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 14th
Scott’s Rank: 15th

Hunter: I don’t know what was in the Islanders’ coffee last week, but they were relentless, twice hitting the 40-shot total and doubling both the Blackhawks and Panthers in shots. They’re still second in the Metropolitan, but there are four other division rivals within six points of them in the standings. They’ll need more wins to clinch.

15. Philadelphia Flyers

Record: 37-24-12, -3
Last Week: 16th (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 17th
Scott’s Rank: 12th

Hunter: After the Flyers lost 12 times in a 15-game stretch before the Olympics, it felt like another lost season for the City of Brotherly Love. But since the league returned from the break, Philadelphia is 12-4-1, and with 10 games left, they’re just four points back. Did you know Owen Tippett is three goals short of his first career 30-goal season? Now you do!

Scott: Oh, I know, because he very nearly cost me a fantasy semifinal matchup with his hat trick on Saturday.

Hunter: Owen Tippett: Fantasy hockey lock of the week!

Scott: To be fair, it was just the one game, but it was good enough to have me chewing off my nails watching that overtime, knowing a goal from Tippett would have ended my season.

16. Edmonton Oilers

Record: 37-28-9, +7
Last Week: 18th (+2)
Hunter’s Rank: 15th
Scott’s Rank: 17th

Scott: I caught the Oilers’ 4-2 win over the Ducks on Saturday, and it served as a reminder why there may still be hope with this team. It wasn’t a dominant win by any means, but it was a reminder that their experience these past two seasons could be enough to get them out of the Pacific Division “pillow fight”. The Ducks and Mammoth are solid teams but are new to the dance, the Golden Knights are a mess (more on that in a sec), and the other teams in the playoff bubble just don’t stand out enough for me. With Connor McDavid playing as well as he is right now, Zach Hyman having an underrated year, and Evan Bouchard running away with the defensemen scoring race, they may be able to find the right gears to get out of this division. Playing the Central Division is a different story, but maybe there’s enough juice left for another run.

Speaking of Bouchard, how much of an advantage in the scoring race do you think he needs to be in consideration for the Norris Trophy? He’s far from a defensive prodigy, but if he’s approaching 100-point territory. It won’t happen, but he should at least get more votes than he probably will.

17. Vegas Golden Knights

Record: 32-26-16, -2
Last Week: 17th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 18th
Scott’s Rank: 16th

Scott:

Like, what is going on here in Vegas? I respect them for never being ones to stand pat and make decisions they think they need to, out of loyalty. But firing Bruce Cassidy only three years after winning the Stanley Cup is a dangerously bold move. I don’t think John Tortorella is as bad as the general public does (what he did with the defensive tools he had in Columbus was incredible, and he’ll have even better tools like that in Vegas). But he’s still a downgrade on Cassidy.

It makes me wonder if either management is on the hot seat if Vegas falls short this season, or they’re worried they have to blow up the team after this season and are truly going all in. Otherwise, this is the kind of move you make *after* falling short in the playoffs, right? I guess Cassidy is the kind of coach who eventually loses the room, but this is a PDO-firing if I’ve ever seen one (they’re last in 5v5 SV% this season and last in 5v5 shooting percentage since the Olympic break). If Kelly McCrimmon and George McPhee aren’t on the hot seat already, they probably will be if this doesn’t work out.

Hunter: I think there’s some smoke to your management theory, as the last two seasons have been less than adequate for ownership (so much for Bill Simmons’ “You can’t complain for five years after winning a championship” theory). I’m with you in that it was more so bad goaltending and lower-than-expected goal scoring that led to Cassidy’s demise, but you have to believe the Vegas management group thought they could pull a Robbie Ftorek and carry that coaching bump into the playoffs.

Also, selfishly … the league is better with Tortorella in it. I’m sorry, but it’s true. This will either be a complete trainwreck or they’ll be celebrating a second Stanley Cup in Sin City. There’s no in between.

Scott: It’s funny to think that three of Canada’s four coaches for the Olympics have been unemployed in the last year. And hopefully, if we want to include the women’s team, it will be four by the end of the year… looking at you, Troy Ryan.

18. Utah Mammoth

Record: 38-30-6, +23
Last Week: 14th (-4)
Hunter’s Rank: 16th
Scott’s Rank: 19th

Scott: The Mammoth continue to sputter along as the playoffs draw closer, as they lost three of four games before bouncing back with a 6-2 win over the Kings. Actually, Utah’s last two wins are over the Kings, so they’re at least able to beat the teams they need to in the playoff race and keep their distance over the second Wild Card spot.

I’ve talked up the Mammoth’s game a lot this season. But if there’s one big concern I have with them, it’s Karel Vejmelka. Not because of his play, but because of how much he’s playing. Vitek Vanecek has played just eight times in 2026, and Utah may be overworking Vejmelka to the point where he won’t be of much help come playoff time. The Mammoth have amended that recently, with Vanecek playing in four of their last seven games, but it’s not ideal.

19. Washington Capitals

Record: 37-28-9, +13
Last Week: 19th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 19th
Scott’s Rank: 18th

Hunter: The Capitals started the week getting shut out by the Blues, but followed with wins over the Mammoth and Golden Knights. Wait a minute … Vegas fired Bruce Cassidy after Saturday’s loss to Washington. Are you saying the  Capitals were the final nail in the coffin? I don’t know if that’s a compliment or an insult.

Scott: Last week also saw Alex Ovechkin score his 34th career hat trick, a number that still feels kind of low considering how amazing he’s been. But it has me feeling sentimental about Ovi again, because that could very well have been his last hat trick. Cherish him while you can, folks!

20. Los Angeles Kings

Record: 29-26-18, -27
Last Week: 20th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 21st
Scott’s Rank: 20th

Scott: I don’t think any team sums up McDavid’s “pillow fight” comments better than the Kings. They’ve currently lost five of their last six games, the kind of run which, in March, would end your playoff chances. And yet, they sit one point out of a playoff spot WITH a game in hand. Artemi Panarin continues to be the lone driving force of this team with seven goals and 18 points in 17 games since he was dealt to Los Angeles, and he may be the only reason they sneak in.

21. Nashville Predators

Record: 34-31-9, -26
Last Week: 22nd (+1)
Hunter’s Rank: 20th
Scott’s Rank: 23rd

Hunter: How …  how did we get to this point? Scott and I have spent the majority of the season pointing out Nashville’s flaws and wondering either A) when Andrew Brunette would be fired, and B) who the Predators would trade. While they did move on from expendable pieces, they are in a Wildcard spot, despite losing three games in regulation last week. I don’t know, I just think a team that’s six games below .500 shouldn’t be in a playoff spot. But maybe I’m out of touch.

Scott: To be fair, I have at least been complimentary towards their underlying numbers this season, so I wouldn’t say I’m shocked to see them here, especially when they mostly just traded the mediocre parts of their team and replaced them with younger options. But yeah, right now their goal, if they make the playoffs, is going to be: “Can we be better than the last time we played the Avs in a lopsided first-round matchup?”

22. Florida Panthers

Record: 35-35-3, -28
Last Week: 21st (-1)
Hunter’s Rank: 23rd
Scott’s Rank: 21st

Scott: As someone who still has some support for the Leafs, it pisses me off how much better the Panthers (and the Bruins last season) are at tanking a season when they know that’s that. Florida has had some help thanks to an ungodly amount of injuries this season, but they’ve also played horribly with a 43.92% 5v5 expected goal share since the deadline, the worst in the league. They needed to finish in the bottom 10 to reclaim their first-round pick from the Blackhawks, and they’re currently the fifth-worst (extra salt on the wound to the Leafs). With nine games left, they could still fall as low as third or second-worst, too.

Florida’s going to get Gavin McKenna, aren’t they?

Hunter: Come on, why would the NHL want a potential superstar to play in a market like Florida, where he could immediately help extend a potential three- or four-Stanley Cup-winning dynasty, and be part of the continued growth in non-traditional markets that have massive television markets? That’s just silly.

23. New Jersey Devils

Record: 38-33-2, -19
Last Week: 23rd (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 24th
Scott’s Rank: 22nd

Scott: Today, I randomly remembered a comment we got after a power rankings in late October, who was mad we didn’t have the Devils ahead of the Avalanche after a matchup between the two of them saw New Jersey win 4-3. Not only did that age terribly immediately with the Avs winning 8-4 the following day, but… yeah, I wouldn’t say they’ve been anywhere close since then. This is why we don’t rank teams over another because of random regular season results between the two of them!

That said, there has been a recent return to form, with the Devils winning six of their last eight games and playing quite well under the hood. At least it shows some promise for next season?

24. Winnipeg Jets

Record: 31-30-12, -16
Last Week: 24th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 22nd
Scott’s Rank: 24th

Scott: Since I boldly proclaimed the Jets could make a run for the playoffs after the trade deadline, the Jets have gone… 5-4-2 and have closed the gap on a playoff spot by two points. That goes to show how tough it is to gain ground this late in the playoff race, but Winnipeg hasn’t exactly done itself any favours either. Getting rid of Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn hasn’t improved their underlying play either, as they’re still sporting a 47.76% 5v5 xGF%. You can’t be right about everything, so I’ll take this as a long shot.

Hunter: For god’s sake, they’re below .500 since your prediction, how the hell are we still reasonably talking about the playoffs?!? I HATE this season’s Western Conference.

Gary Bettman*: Actually, Hunter, they’re above .500 since Scott’s prediction. As you’ll see, they have 12 points out of a possible 22 points in 11 games, giving them a .545 points percentage in that span.

Hunter: To paraphrase you, Mr. Bettman: I didn’t want to hear this!

*not actually Gary Bettman

25. Seattle Kraken

Record: 32-29-11, -18
Last Week: 25th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 25th
Scott’s Rank: 26th

Hunter: Well, I guess the Kraken read Scott and I’s back and forth from last week and decided to appease both of us: They finally earned points from a loss. Ladies and gentlemen, we did it. Sure, they’re two points out of a playoff spot, but is it worth the revenue from two home playoff games for you to get spanked in the first round by the Avalanche? I mean, maybe?

26. St. Louis Blues

Record: 31-30-11, -36
Last Week: 26th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 26th
Scott’s Rank: 25th

Hunter: The Blues won all three of their games last week, capped with a 5-1 victory over the Leafs. It still feels like they’re out of reach for a playoff spot, and they still possess a minus-36 goal differential. But this is the Western Conference: nothing makes sense. Plus, the 2023-24 Capitals clinched a playoff spot with a minus-37 goal differential. Hockey!

27. San Jose Sharks

Record: 33-11-7, -38
Last Week: 27th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 28th
Scott’s Rank: 28th

Scott: Last week, I talked about how the Sharks needed to find that next gear and lock in if they wanted to make the playoffs. Their response? They lost two of three games last week. In fact, they lost six games in a row before their 3-2 win over the Blue Jackets on Saturday. Only one of those losses had high stakes for their playoff chances (the 6-3 loss to Nashville on Tuesday), but this is not a good form to be in. Even Macklin Celebrini was slowing down with just two assists during that six-game losing streak before potting a goal and an assist in their win over Columbus. Everything has sputtered at the wrong time in San Jose.

28. Toronto Maple Leafs

Record: 31-30-13, -30
Last Week: 28th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 27th
Scott’s Rank: 29th

Scott: Guys, can you stop winning games, please! You’re supposed to not give the Bruins a good draft pick, not hand them a top-ten pick. Since Auston Matthews’ injury, the Leafs are 4-3-2 (if you include the win over Anaheim), and are creeping up the standings. They’re still 13 points out of a playoff spot, so that’s definitely not happening, but they aren’t helping their draft pick. Heck, at this point, they may as well win out and just give the Bruins the lowest pick they possibly can.

Hunter: The Ewing Theory lives! That’s TWO Bill Simmons references in one story! Good job by you!

29. Calgary Flames

Record: 31-34-8, -36
Last Week: 29th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 29th
Scott’s Rank: 27th

Hunter: Did you know the Flames have a better record than the Golden Knights since the Rasmus Andersson trade? Calgary is 10-11-3 while Vegas is 8-14-4 since Jan. 18. What does it mean? Ehh, probably nothing, other than the Flames aren’t a good team, and neither are the Golden Knights.

30. New York Rangers

Record: 30-35-9, -21
Last Week: 30th (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 30th
Scott’s Rank: 30th

Scott: In a week with an incredibly lopsided schedule, with every team playing Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the Rangers were the lone team playing on every light night. This would have been a fantasy hockey owner’s dream if it weren’t for the fact that the Rangers are horrible. But they did their best with wins in two of four games, and they didn’t even move out of the bottom three!

Also, I wanted to give a quick shoutout to Tye Kartye. He was an afterthought when he was claimed on waivers from Seattle, but since coming to New York, he has nine points in 16 games and has found himself in a top-six role lately. Now, that’s largely because the Rangers have no one else to play there, but he’s making the most of this opportunity.

31. Chicago Blackhawks

Record: 27-34-13, -52
Last Week: 31st (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 31st
Scott’s Rank: 31st

Hunter: There’s a world where the Blackhawks get the No. 1 overall pick this summer, select Gavin McKenna, and a superline of him and Connor Bedard dominates the Central Division for a decade. There’s another world where Chicago is actually good and competes for a playoff spot. There are infinite universes, people!

Scott: Considering Frank Nazar’s season and Anton Frondell’s solid start, McKenna would add an embarrassment of riches to their forward group.

32. Vancouver Canucks

Record: 21-43-8, -88
Last Week: 32nd (0)
Hunter’s Rank: 32nd
Scott’s Rank: 32nd

Hunter: On Monday, we’ll see mainly sunny skies with some clouds, high of 8 C; Tuesday will see a slight increase at 11 C, but we’ll get overnight rain that will carry into Wednesday; Thursday will be a mix of sun and clouds and we’ll see some Good Friday showers that will remain into Saturday. And finally, the Canucks lost all three games in regulation last week, expect that to continue on the road next week against the Golden Knights, Avalanche, and Wild.
