A former NHL star is trying to stay in the game.

On Friday, the Hamilton Hammers, the American Hockey League affiliate of the New York Islanders, announced that the team has signed forward Robby Fabbri to a professional tryout.

Fabbri started the 2026-27 season without a contract, after a season in which he saw limited playing time. After starting the 2025-26 campaign on a PTO with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, the Mississauga, Ont. native signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Blues in December. He dressed in 15 games for the Blues, scoring four points, before being put on waivers. He was claimed by the Minnesota Wild, scoring a goal in six games. He didn’t dress for any of Minnesota’s games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In 21 regular-season games last year, Fabbri posted two goals and three assists for five points.

Fabbri has appeared in 463 regular-season games in his NHL career, scoring 108 goals and 113 assists for 221 points. The 30-year-old also has 16 points in 30 playoff games, including a Stanley Cup with the Blues in 2019. Fabbri also has eight points in 12 AHL games.

The Hammers also signed forward Antonio Stranges to a PTO. The former London Knight was a fourth-round pick by the Dallas Stars in 2020, but has yet to make it to the NHL. He has scored 47 goals and 113 points in 208 regular-season games with the Stars’ top farm team, the Texas Stars, with another five points in 18 Calder Cup Playoff games.

The Hammers (3-8-0-2) are struggling since relocating from Bridgeport. The team sits last in the North Division, despite playing more games than the rest of their division. Hamilton is set to host the Providence Bruins on Friday night.
