One notable acquisition the San Jose Sharks have made is going to be sticking around the Bay Area for some time.

According to multiple reports, the San Jose Sharks have re-signed forward Kiefer Sherwood to a five-year contract extension.

Sherwood’s new deal has trade protection and a signing bonus for the first four years, though official details have to be released.

It’s a hefty pay bump for the physical and bruising winger, as Sherwood is in the final season of his two-year contract that he signed with the Vancouver Canucks in July 2024, which carries a cap hit of $1.5 million.

The Sharks received Sherwood as part of a trade with the Canucks back in January, marking the beginning of Vancouver’s teardown. San Jose gave up defenseman Cole Clayton and two-second round picks to get the 30-year-old.

The move added some necessary toughness for a Sharks team that has surprised many this year, as they look to work their way into the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in seven years.

It did take a while for the Columbus, Ohio native to debut with his new team, as an undisclosed injury suffered while with the Canucks landed him on injured reserve. Sherwood finally made his debut with San Jose on Feb. 4. He has appeared in teal five times thus far, scoring a goal and an assist in Tuesday’s 7-5 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

In 49 games this year, Sherwood has scored 18 goals and seven assists for 25 points. It might be tough for him to replicate his career-best performance from the 2024-25 campaign, when he notched 19 goals and 21 assists for 40 points on a bumbling Canucks squad. He also set a new NHL single-season record last season, delivering 462 checks.

Sherwood has appeared in 314 regular-season games in his NHL career, scoring 61 goals and 62 assists for 123 points, along with two points in eight postseason games.

The Sharks (30-25-4) are fifth in the Pacific Division, four points back of the Edmonton Oilers for the last Wild Card spot.
