One of the most talented prospects in hockey has signed his first NHL contract.

On Wednesday, the San Jose Sharks announced that the team had signed forward Michael Misa to a standard entry-level contract.

The details of the deal have to be revealed.

Misa was taken second overall by the Sharks in the 2025 NHL Draft, following the New York Islanders’ decision to take defenseman Matthew Schaefer No. 1. It comes after the Oakville native had a stellar season with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League. In 65 games, he scored 62 goals and 72 assists for 134 points, setting franchise records for the most goals and points in a single season. He was the top scorer in the entire Canadian Hockey League, earning the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL’s Most Outstanding Player. Misa was also named to the CHL and OHL’s First All-Star Teams.

That followed an impressive 2023-24 campaign where Misa was a point-per-game player for Saginaw, leading the team to the franchise’s first Memorial Cup.

Across three seasons in the OHL, which saw him win the Emms Family Award as the league’s rookie of the year in 2022-23, Misa piled on 113 goals and 152 assists for 265 points. He also scored another 22 points in 32 postseason games.

Misa has been on everyone’s radar as a future NHLer. He was granted exceptional status to enter the OHL at age 14. Internationally, Misa helped Canada win the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2023, along with winning the silver medal at the 2022 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge with Canada Red.

With Misa signing his ELC, it means he will most likely get a shot at making the NHL this fall. If the Sharks don’t think he’s ready for the big time (though I find that doubtful), he could be returned to the Spirit prior to playing in 10 games, or else face burning the first year of his contract.
