After Friday’s stunning news that star winger Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning, we’ve gotten statements from Lightning general manager Julien Brisebois and head coach Jon Cooper on the matter. Now, we finally got to hear from the man at the center of the news.

Kucherov held a media scrum on Monday and answered questions about his trade request for the first time, addressing the reasoning behind his decision.

“It was never about the money for me,” Kucherov told reporters. “It was more about poor communication and respect. Over the last four months, we only have had two conversations. Julian, in the end, made it clear that I’m free to walk on July 1st.”

From his comments, it seems that Kucherov felt he hasn’t received the treatment befitting Tampa Bay’s all-time scoring leader that has won two Stanley Cups and two Hart Trophies with the Lightning.

Kucherov, 33, is in the final season of an eight-year, $76 million contract with Tampa Bay. He’s made it clear he does not plan to re-sign with the Lightning, but stated on Monday that he will continue to give his full effort while he remains on the team.

“For now, I’m part of this team, and I will do anything I can to help my teammates win,” Kucherov said.

Kucherov also spoke to the appreciation he has for the Lightning organization as a whole, despite the trade request.

“I got drafted here,” Kucherov said. “This is my 14th year. (Won) a couple championships. I met a lot of great people. My kids grew up here. I’m forever grateful for this organization.”

The Russian national has four goals and 14 assists for a team-leading 18 points through 13 games this seaosn.

Tampa Bay hosts the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday and the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday for a miniature two-game homestand.
