Leafs’ Joseph Woll rejoins team, will resume on-ice participation

The Toronto Maple Leafs just got some much-needed good news regarding their goaltending.
The Maple Leafs’ public relations announced Friday that goalie Joseph Woll is rejoining the team to resume on-ice activities as part of a return-to-play process.
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that goaltender Joseph Woll is rejoining the team and will resume team activities and on-ice participation as part of the return-to-play process.
— Leafs PR (@LeafsPR) October 24, 2025This news comes just one day after the team placed Woll on long-term injured reserve (LTIR). As of now, there is no timetable for when Woll will return to game action.
The situation with Woll has been mysterious, to say the least. On Sept. 23, Leafs GM Brad Treliving disclosed that the 27-year-old netminder would be taking a leave from the team for personal reasons.
Whatever the cause of Woll’s absence may have been, his return represents major relief for a team that was searching for goaltending solutions beyond Anthony Stolarz. Stolarz himself has gotten off to a less-than-stellar start, sporting a 2-3-1 record with a .894 save percentage and a 3.01 goals-against average. Former Montreal Canadien Cayden Primeau has been the only other goaltender to start for the Maple Leafs this season, snatching a victory against the Nashville Predators despite giving up four goals on 30 shots.
Last season, Woll started the most games in net for Toronto, going 27-14-1 with a .909 SV% and a 2.73 GAA in 41 starts. In the playoffs, he went 3-4 with an .886 SV% and a 3.56 GAA.
When Woll does return, the Maple Leafs hope he will reunite with Stolarz to reform one the NHL’s best goalie tandems. In 33 starts last season, Stolarz earned a record of 21-8-3 with a league-leading .926 save percantage and a 2.14 goals-against average.
The Maple Leafs have a home-and-home against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday and Saturday, making it likely that Primeau will get the start in one of those games.
