Leafs’ Oliver Ekman-Larsson leaves game against Red Wings with lower-body injury

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson left Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings with a lower-body injury and would not return.

Ekman-Larsson appeared to have sustained his injury in the first period after falling awkwardly while battling for a puck in the Red Wing zone. He would head for the locker room and not return.

Going into Wednesday night, Ekman-Larsson led Toronto’s blue line in all offensive categories with eight goals and 23 assists for 31 points, averaging just under 21 minutes through 49 games in 2025-26.
In two seasons with Toronto, whom Ekman-Larsson signed a four-year contract with in July 2024, the 34-year-old blueliner has 12 goals and 48 assists for 60 points in 126 regular-season contests.
In 1,108 career games, Ekman-Larsson has 156 goals and 375 assists for 531 points with the Leafs, Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks and Arizona Coyotes.
He’s also played in 62 career playoff games, where he’s recorded six goals and 12 assists for 18 points. He won the Stanley Cup with the Panthers in 2024, where he finished with two goals and four assists for six points, averaging 15:27 of ice time.
Ekman-Larsson, taken No. 6 overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, spent two seasons in Sweden’s top domestic league with Leksands IF between 2008 and 2010. He recorded 12 goals and 32 assists for 44 points.
Ahead of Wednesday’s game, the Leafs were 24-17-8 with 56 points in 49 games, sixth in the Atlantic Division and two points back of a Wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference.
Meanwhile, the Red Wings are 30-16-4 with 64 points, second in the Atlantic.
