The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on social media that forward Steven Lorentz left Wednesday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets with an upper-body injury and would not return.

Lorentz’s final shift came late in the second period after Blue Jackets’ defenseman Jake Christiansen delivered a hit that sent the Toronto forward into the boards awkwardly. He would slowly get up and head towards the Leafs’ bench, and play would continue, where Columbus defender Dante Fabbro scored to make it 5-1 Blue Jackets.

Lorentz finished the game with an assist on Sammy Blais’ goal and 7:17 of ice time. The Leafs would lose 6-3

Through eight games this season, Lorentz has four assists. Since joining the Leafs ahead of the 2024-25 season, he’s recorded eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points in 88 regular-season games. He also recorded two assists in 13 playoff games last spring.

Lorentz signed a three-year contract extension with Toronto last June, which will pay him $1.35 million per season through the 2027-28 season.

Now in his sixth NHL season, Lorentz, a native of Kitchener, Ont., has 29 goals and 36 assists for 65 points in 317 career regular-season games with the Leafs and Florida Panthers. He’s also played in 45 career playoff games, recording two goals and six assists for eight points. Lorentz was part of the Panthers’ Stanley Cup championship in 2024.

Lorentz, a seventh-round pick for the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, spent parts of three seasons in the AHL, scoring 26 goals and recording 29 assists for 55 points in 93 regular-season games. He won a Calder Cup championship with the Charlotte Checkers in 2019.
