Just over a week after the blockbuster Connor Hellebuyck deal, the New Jersey Devils are making another trade involving a goaltender.

This time, they are sending goaltender Remi Poirier to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 2027 seventh-round draft pick.

Prior to this season, Washington lost goaltender Clay Stevenson to the Winnipeg Jets via waivers, so acquiring Poirier will help restore their organizational goaltending depth.

Poirier, 25, was also a waiver claim ahead of this season, getting snagged by the Devils from the Dallas Stars. He hadn’t gotten into an NHL game for New Jersey, and rather than risk losing him on waivers in an attempt to assign him to the American Hockey League (AHL), the Devils have taken a profit by flipping him to the Capitals for a seventh-round pick.

The Farnham, Quebec native spent all of last season with Dallas’ AHL affiliate Texas Stars, where he posted a 27-19-6 record with a .912 save percentage and a 2.61 goals-against average in 52 appearances. He then went 2-3 with a .883 SV% and a 2.92 GAA during Texas’ first-round playoff loss to the Chicago Wolves in five games.

Selected by Dallas in the sixth round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Poirier has yet to play in an NHL game. After completing a four-year junior career with the Gatineau Olympiques of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), he became a full-time professional in the 2022-23 season, which he split between the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads and Texas. He spent the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons entirely with Texas, during which time he compiled a 34-27-6 record with a .906 SV% and a 2.85 GAA.

It remains to be seen how much, if any, NHL action Poirier will see with the Capitals, who have Logan Thompson as their established starter and Charlie Lindgren as his current backup.
