The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced on Wednesday that Washington Capitals forward Brandon Duhaime has been fined $2,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct during Washington’s 5-1 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday.

While it’s unclear exactly what happened, the incident apparently occurred during the second period when Duhaime was on Washington’s bench and directed something towards a Seattle player, whether it be words, a gesture, or something else.

It was an overall raucous game for Duhaime, who also dropped the gloves with Kraken forward Jacob Melanson at the tail end of the third period.

In 54 games played this season, Duhaime has four goals and two assists for six points. Last season for Washington, he put up nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in all 82 regular season games.

Initially selected out of the USHL by the Minnesota Wild in the fourth round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Duhaime would go on to play three seasons for Providence College in the NCAA. He then spent his first two professional seasons with the AHL’s Iowa Wild, before becoming a full-time NHLer by the 2021-22 season.

The Coral Springs, Florida native played two-plus seasons with Minnesota, registering 19 goals and 16 assists for 35 points over a total of 193 games, before getting dealt to the Colorado Avalanche in March of 2024 in exchange for a third-round draft pick.

After finishing up the 2023-24 season with Colorado, Duhaime signed a two-year, $3.7 million contract with the Capitals. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

With 57 points through 54 games, Washington is currently four points back of a playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division.

The Capitals will visit the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday before starting a miniature two-game homestand against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.
