The Winnipeg Jets have gotten a timeline for their injured veteran forward.

Head coach Scott Arniel announced on Monday that winger Nino Niederreiter will be out four to six weeks after he underwent surgery for a lower-body injury.

Niederreiter, 33, has not played in any of the Jets’ three games since returning from the Olympic break. It’s not entirely clear when or how Niederreiter suffered the injury, but it’s possible he could’ve sustained it or aggravated it while playing for Switerland’s national team during the Olympics. Niederreiter had a goal in five games for his country in Milan, with Switzerland getting knocked out of the tournament by Finland in the quarterfinals.

In 55 games played for Winnipeg this season, Niederreiter has eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points.

Initially selected fifth overall by the New York Islanders in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Niederreiter played 64 total games for the Islanders, managing just two goals and an assist, before getting dealt to the Minnesota Wild ahead of the 2013-14 season for forward Cal Clutterbuck and a third-round pick.

Niederreiter spent five-plus seasons in Minnesota, including a career-best campaign of 25 goals and 32 assists for 57 points over 82 games in 2016-17. Midway through the 2018-19 season, the Wild traded Niederreiter to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Victor Rask.

After three-plus seasons in Carolina, Niederreiter signed as a free agent with the Nashville Predators ahead of the 2022-23 season, but was traded to the Jets at that year’s deadline for a second-round pick. He has stayed in Winnipeg ever since, and is now in the second season of a three-year, $12 million deal with the team.

The Jets currently sit in sixth place in the Central Division, with 56 points through 59 games.

Winnipeg will kick off an eight-game homestand on Tuesday when they take on the Chicago Blackhawks.
