Bobby Ryan News

Ryan (undisclosed) will be a game time decision on Saturday.

Ryan stayed on late at the morning skate and had a meeting with the trainers, which suggests he is battling some type of injury. He reportedly took a slash late in Thursday’s game, but no word on if that is what is ailing him. Monitor his status at 6:30 p.m ET when warmups start.

The Senators signed Bobby Ryan to a seven-year deal worth $50.75 million.

Ryan, 27, had 23 goals and 25 assists (48 points) in 70 games in his debut season with the Senators. This signing is key for the Senators, who have lost Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza in the last two years. Ryan didn't seem totally interested in signing at the start of training camp, so the Senators made some significant strides in their negotiations. Ryan will look to get back to 30 goals in 2014-15.

Ryan will undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia today in Montreal. The procedure will force Ryan to miss the remainder of the 2013-14 season.

“Bobby has been dealing with the discomfort of this injury since it was sustained in November,” said Senators general manager Bryan Murray. “Both Bobby and our medical staff were hopeful that we could hold off from having surgery until the completion of the season, but he aggravated the condition last Saturday in Dallas to the point that surgery is now the only option.” Ryan recorded 48 points, including a team-high 23 goals, 45 penalty minutes and a plus-7 rating over 70 games in his first season with the Senators.

Ryan will play this afternoon.

Ryan was injured on a vicious hit from Dennis Seidenberg on Friday vs. Boston. Ryan said yesterday that his shoulders, back and neck were a little sore but he was not dealing with a concussion. Ryan appears to be fine, so get his 10 goals and 20 points in your lineup.

Ryan (upper-body) is expected to play on Sunday.

"That's the plan, I mean, I think we're probably going to consult everybody, whether it's shortly or tomorrow morning, I'm not sure yet," said Ryan. "I felt pretty good, just a lot of stiffness in some areas in my upper back and shoulders and neck, but for the most part no issues as far as my head is concerned, which is I think what people seemed to think."

Ryan (head) is skating this morning.

Ryan left Friday's contest late in the third period after taking an elbow to the head from Dennis Seidenberg and did not return. Being on the ice this morning is a positive sign that Ryan did not sustain a concussion or any other serious injury that would require him to miss an extended period of time. Ryan will likely be in the lineup on Sunday vs. Columbus.

From the moment Bobby Ryan was traded to Ottawa, fans of the Senators quickly started imagining how good he would look on a line beside Jason Spezza. The pair skated alongside Milan Michalek for the team's first day of on-ice training and already the buzz is building as to what the trio could accomplish. All three players offer a different skill set as Michalek has great speed, Spezza has great vision and Ryan can finish.

Ryan, 26, is a four-time thirty-goal scorer and offers Spezza a bona fide offensive right-winger for the first time since Dany Heatley, who had back-to-back 50-goal seasons playing with Spezza. Spezza said it will take time to get used to each other on the ice.

The Ottawa Senators have acquired Bobby Ryan from the Anaheim Ducks for Jakob Silfverberg, Stefan Noesen and a 2014 first round pick.

Ryan, 26, scored at least 30 goals from 2008-2012 but only managed 11 goals in the lockout shortened season. He is signed through 2014-15 with a cap-hit of $5.1 million per year. On a day where the Senators lost their long-time captain, Daniel Alfredsson they have made a splash by acquiring the 2005 #2 overall pick.

Teemu Selanne and Bobby Ryan also both have seven points in their last six games.

Ryan has 17 goals on the season and could get back into the 30-35 goal range if he continues his tear. The window of opportunity in acquiring the power forward at a discount is rapidly closing.
