The 25-year-old defenseman did not play on Saturday and has been ruled out for Wednesday's matchup against the New Jersey Devils. His status remains to be determined for the team's next contest on Friday against the New York Islanders. Kevin Shattenkirk has assumed McAvoy's duties on the top powerplay in his absence.

The 25-year-old defenseman did not participate in practice on Friday, and is considered day-to-day but hopeful to play Saturday. If McAvoy misses any time, look for Hampus Lindholm to move up to the top powerplay unit, where he saw success last season when McAvoy was out of the lineup.

McAvoy was suspended for four games following a hit to the head on October 30th but he's eligible to return to the lineup vs. Montreal. McAvoy was back on the top power-play unit in Friday's practice and enters play with eight points (2G / 6A) in nine games this season.

NHL Player Safety announced McAvoy has been suspended for four games for an illegal check to the head on Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

The hit occurred in the third period of Monday's game against the Panthers. McAvoy received a match penalty on the play and was ejected from the game. It's the second suspension of McAvoy's after he was previously suspended one game for an illegal hit to the head on then Columbus Blue Jackets forward Josh Anderson in Game Six of the 2019 Eastern Conference Semi-finals. He will be eligible to return on October 11th in Montreal.

The 25-year-old is in the midst of his second-straight 50+ point season, with his seven goals, 43 assists, 102 SOG, 54 PIMs and a +27 plus/minus through 65 games prior to his injury.

McAvoy has been on the injured reserve since the off-season after undergoing shoulder surgery. He will return Bostons' lineup tonight adding a massive spark to the already 11-2-0 Bruins. In 2021-22 he was 11th among defensemen in points (56), 23rd in goals (10) and 28th in shots (166).

McAvoy has not played this season as he recovered from eft shoulder arthroscopic stabilization surgery on June 3. McAvoy returns to the Bruins' lineup ahead of schedule and will likely slot right back in atop their top defensive pair and power-play unit. He finished 2021-22 with a career-high 10 goals and 56 points across 78 games while finishing with 21 PPP.

McAvoy was surprisingly on the ice in a non-contact jersey Monday after missing all of the 2022-23 season so far due to off-season shoulder surgery. It was a nice surprise as McAvoy was not expected back until closer to the new year. McAvoy enjoyed a breakout season in 2021-22, reaching double-digit goals (10) for the first time while putting up 56 points (10G/46A) in 78 games played.

McAvoy (shoulder) is expected to be out until late November/early December.

McAvoy underwent a shoulder procedure in early June and the expected recovery was six months. McAvoy should miss roughly 20-to-25 games to open the season and Hampus Lindholm should play big minutes and could be the quarterback on the No.1 PP unit while McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk are on the mend.
