Gibson was a fourth-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals that has yet to play an NHL game. The 26-year-old has spent most of the 2025-26 campaign in the AHL, where he has a 2.79 GAA and .907 SV% in 22 games (9-8-3). Gibson was recalled for precautionary reasons in case Charlie Lindgren (undisclosed) is not able to suit up as Logan Thompson's backup.

Washington added to their goaltending depth on Tuesday after signing 26-year-old Mitchell Gibson to a two-year, two-way contract. The Capitals 2018 4th round pick has spent the season bouncing between the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL) and the Hershey Bears (AHL). Gibson will have to pass through waivers before he can be loaned back to Hershey (AHL) and is expected to do so today.

Gibson was a late addition to the Capitals lineup in place of Charlie Lindgren, who is unavailable due to personal family reasons. Gibson is yet to appear in an NHL game and split time between South Carolina (ECHL) and Hershey (AHL) this season.

Gibson spent his first professional season playing 42 games with South Carolina (ECHL) in 2023-24 and has earned himself a one-year, two-way contract with the Capitals. The 25-year-old will add some goaltending depth to the Capitals after he produced a 2.56 GAA and .899 SV% in 42 games with South Carolina after graduating from Harvard after three successful seasons.
