Stephen Weiss News

Weiss pulled his groin in his first game with Grand Rapids (AHL).

Weiss' conditioning stint did not last very long… He will head back to Detroit and likely be placed on injured reserve to make room for Johan Franzen who is set to be back this weekend. Weiss can not stay healthy and should be considered in any fantasy format until he can play in consecutive games.

The Red Wings have assigned Stephen Weiss to Grand Rapids (AHL) on a conditioning assignment.

Weiss has been a healthy scratch in all but one of the Red Wings first eight games. The 31-year-old played just 8:03 and failed to record a point or shot. He has been a huge disappointment for Detroit since signing a big deal two summers ago. He will head to Grand Rapids where he will try to get back up to speed and hopefully crack the Wings' lineup when he returns.

Weiss will make his season debut on Saturday.

Weiss was a healthy scratch for the first five games, but he will get into the lineup tonight vs. the Maple Leafs because Johan Franzen is out with a knee injury. Weiss had a terrible debut season in Detroit in 2013-14, he had just four points (2G / 2A) in 26 games. He will look to earn himself a permanent roster spot with a good performance tonight.

Weiss will be a healthy scratch in the Red Wings season opener.

Weiss, 31, had a disastrous debut season with the Red Wings and 2014-15 will start with him sitting in the press box. He has played just 43 games and recorded only three goals and five assists over the last two season and with the emergence of Riley Sheahan and a healthy Darren Helm, Weiss may find it difficult to get into the lineup at times this season.

Weiss expected to be a healthy scratch in the Red Wings season opener.

After a terrible debut season with the Red Wings due to injuries, it looks like 2014-15 will start on a sour note. Weiss will take a seat while the younger players like Andrej Nestrasil will get a look. The Red Wings are expected to be patient with Weiss as he continues to work his way back from sports hernia surgery.

Weiss not expected to play again this season after experiencing multiple setbacks in comeback from hernia surgery.

After signing a five-year $24.5 million dollar deal with the Red Wings this offseason, Weiss scored just two goals with two assists in 26 games… Yikes. Making an average of $4.9 million of the next four years, the Red Wings are certainly hoping for a healthy Weiss next year. Paying a player over a million dollars per point is not what GM Ken Holland is in to.

Weiss (sports hernia) skated today for the first time in 10 days.

Weiss says he is feeling better, but there is no way of knowing when he will be ready. Weiss has reportedly been nearing a return a few times this season, but countless setbacks have really destroyed his first season with the Red Wings.

Weiss (sports hernia) may have to play a few games with Grand Rapids before returning to the Red Wings lineup.

Weiss has been skating for several weeks but isn’t ready for the fast pace, high intensity and full contact of a game, so he did not play with the Griffins on Sunday, as was originally planned. “I practiced twice last week with the (Plymouth) Whalers and three times (this week) with the (Red Wings), so I’m starting to feel really good but it hasn’t been that much practice time,” Weiss said. Weiss didn’t rule out being cleared for the first game following the Olympic break, Wednesday at Montreal. “That’s what we’re shooting for,” Weiss said. “Obviously, that’s not going to be my decision. I might still have to play a game or two (in Grand Rapids) next week. By then I’ll be more ready to play a game.”

Weiss (sports hernia) will start skating with his former OHL team the Plymouth Whalers on Tuesday. If everything goes well with Plymouth, Weiss is expected to play with Grand Rapids (AHL) on February 21 and 23.

Weiss has been sidelined since December 10 and underwent surgery for a sports hernia on December 23. The two-week Olympic break will help Weiss get back to 100 per cent. If all goes as expected he should rejoin the Red Wings lineup after the break.

Weiss (sports hernia) is on the ice in full gear for the Red Wings morning skate.

Weiss' original timetable was eight weeks after undergoing surgery on a sports hernia. His participation in the morning skate suggests that Weiss could return before the Olympic break opposed to after. The Red Wings are hoping that Weiss can find his Panthers-form because he has struggled mightily to this point.

Stephen Weiss
Weiss had successful surgery for a sports hernia and is out indefinitely.

Weiss is expected to miss two months and return following the Olympic break. Weiss' first few months as a Red Wing have been forgettable ones. He has had a hard time staying on the ice and when he is in the lineup he has recorded just four points (2G / 2A) in 26 games.

Stephen Weiss
Weiss did not skate this morning and will not play tomorrow because his groin injury flared up.

Weiss will be reevaluated when the team returns to Detroit following Thursday's meeting with the Lightning. It has been a disappointing season statistically for Weiss, but this reoccurring groin injury is making it difficult to get in any sort of groove. Expect Johan Franzen to shift back to centre and either Gustav Nyquist or Justin Abdelkader to play on Pavel Datsyuk's wing.

Weiss moves to the Red Wings top-line.

With Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg both out, Weiss will shift from the 4th line centre to the 1st line RW. He will skate with Johan Franzen and Gustav Nyquist and start on the wing. The Red Wings offseason signing has be a huge disappointment so far posting just two goals and one assist with a minus-4 rating in 22 games. He gets a shot with two talented players tonight, so maybe this is the opportunity he needs to get his season turned around.

Stephen Weiss
Weiss (groin) will not play tonight.

Like Daniel Alfredsson, Weiss let head coach Mike Babcock know that he was ready to go tonight, but will sit. It will be the seventh straight contest that Weiss will miss after tweaking his groin on November 7. Consider him questionable for Sunday.

Stephen Weiss
Weiss (groin) said he won't play tomorrow and is still aiming to return on weekend.

Weiss will miss his fifth straight game. He has been disappointing in his short time in Detroit, recording just two goals and one assist in 17 games. Monitor his status prior to Saturday's game with the Senators.

Stephen Weiss
Weiss (groin) took part in the Red Wings optional skate this morning.

Weiss was not expected to return to the ice until next week, but his participation today is a good sign he will not be out longterm. Weiss had an injury plagued season in 2012-13 so this is no surprise, but the Red Wings are thin up the middle so they could use Weiss back on the ice.
