Cates has scored two goals and four assists (six points) in 21 AHL games this season. The 24-year-old has scored one goal with one assist in 11 career NHL games. He'll replace Kevin Hayes (lower-body) on the active roster.

The Blackhawks have acquired Sam Lafferty from the Penguins for Alex Nylander.
