New York Rangers News

Quick led the Rangers onto the ice for warmups.

Quick has turned back time this season, grossly outplayed Igor Shesterkin, and will likely start for the Rangers on the front end of a back-to-back on Friday. The 37-year-old Quick has been nearly unbeatable this season, winning his last seven starts while posting a serviceable .916 SV%. Quick's 2.09 GAA and .926 SV% surpass anything he has ended the season with throughout his illustrious career. The Rangers will look for their fourth straight win as -116 home favourites against an Oilers team that snapped a three-game skid last night, courtesy of a 6-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

Shesterkin will start in Toronto on Tuesday.

Shesterkin has struggled this season but is coming off one of his stronger performances, saving 21 of 22 shots (.955 SV%) in a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday. His 2.91 GAA and .904 SV% through 18 games (11-7-0) are well below what is expected of the 2021-22 Vezina winner. Shesterkin and the Rangers are slight -102 road underdogs on Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, who defeated them 7-3 one week ago. The Maple Leafs have scored 19 goals over their last three games (2-0-1) and are the hottest team in the NHL over the last five weeks (10-1-4).

Bonino (illness) is listed as a scratch for Friday's game against Anaheim.

Bonino was a very late scratch on Friday, having taken the line rushes in warmups before ultimately deciding he was unable to go. He has one goal and three assists in 27 games this season. Rookie Adam Edstrom will make his NHL debut on Friday in place of Bonino.

Nick Bonino
Vladislav Gavrikov (lower-body) has been placed on the Injured Reserve.

Gavrikov left the Kings' game last Sunday after just 6:36 TOI due to a lower-body injury and missed Wednesday vs. Winnipeg and is now considered out week-to-week after being placed on the Injured Reserve. The 28-year-old defensemen was having one of the strongest offensive seasons of his seven year career, with three goals, six assists, 29 SOG, six PIMs and a +8 plus/minus in 25 games prior to his injury.

Jonathan Quick will start Friday vs. Anaheim.

Quick will draw his second start in three games Friday as he looks to keep his impeccable 8-0-1 record in check vs. Anaheim. The 37-year-old has turned back the clock in his first year in New York, with his best SV% (.922) since 2011-12 and best GAA (2.20) since 2013-14. He takes on the plummeting Anaheim Ducks, who have lost four straight games and are struggling offensively being 29th in the NHL in goals per game (2.61).

Adam Edstrom has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL).

Edstrom had seven goals, two assists, 14 PIMs and a +5 plus/minus in 21 games with Hartford (AHL) and has earned his first NHL call up Friday. The 23-year-old Swedish forward was the Rangers 2019 sixth-round pick (161st overall) and came over after four seasons with Rogle BK of the SHL in 2022-23.

Shesterkin will start against the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

Shesterkin has a decent 2.83 GAA and .908 SV% through 16 games (10-6-0) but has quietly been outperformed by veteran backup Jonathan Quick. Shesterkin has allowed nine goals on his last 64 shots (.859 SV%) and he struggled to showcase the elite form he has possessed in previous seasons. That said, the Rangers have still been able to string together a terrific season and are -166 home favourites against a Toronto Maple Leafs team that lost 4-3 in overtime last night to the New York Islanders.
