New York Rangers News

New York has signed Jonathan Quick to a one-year, $1.55 million contract extension.

Quick has been a serviceable backup since joining the Rangers last season, posting a 2.83 GAA and .904 SV% in 48 combined appearances (27-12-4). The veteran 39-year-old netminder will return to the Rangers for another season, ensuring the team sticks with the same tandem of him and Igor Shesterkin in the 2025-26 campaign.

Shesterkin will start in Winnipeg on Tuesday.

The Rangers are coming off crushing losses to the Columbus Blue Jackets and Ottawa Senators, hurting their hopes for a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Shesterkin will tend the twine on Tuesday and hope for a better result against the Winnipeg Jets. The 29-year-old Shesterkin has a 2.89 GAA, .905 SV%, and four shutouts in 46 games this season (21-21-4). The Rangers enter the action on Tuesday as +169 road underdogs against a Jets team that has lost four of their last six (2-3-1).

New York has signed Urho Vaakanainen to a two-year, $3.10 million contract extension ($1.55 million AAV).

Vaakanainen was acquired in a trade from the Anaheim Ducks earlier this season and has earned himself a two-year, $3.10 million contract extension with the Rangers. The 26-year-old defenseman has averaged 15:599 time-on-ice and scored nine points (2G / 7A) in 30 games with the Rangers this season.

The Rangers acquired Soucy from the Canucks on Thursday in exchange for a 2025 third-round draft pick.

With the emergence of Elias Nils Pettersson on the Canucks blue-line this season, Soucy was deemed to be an expendable asset by Vancouver. Soucy leaves the Canucks after appearing in 99 games across parts of two seasons, registering five goals and 11 assists.

The Rangers have acquired Brendan Brisson and a 2025 3rd Round Pick from the Golden Knights for Reilly Smith.

Brisson was a first-round pick, 29th overall, of the Golden Knights in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The 23-year-old forward played nine games with the Golden Knights this season but has spent most of the 2024-25 campaign in the AHL, tallying 19 points (5G / 14A) in 45 games with the Henderson Silver Knights.

Shesterkin will start against the Capitals on Wednesday.

The Rangers have outscored their opposition 8-0 in their last two games (2-0-0) and have won four of their previous five (4-1-0). They will roll with Shesterkin between the pipes against the Washington Capitals. Shesterkin was excellent in his most recent outing, saving all 21 shots he faced for his fourth shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over the New York Islanders. The 29-year-old netminder has a 2.86 GAA and .906 SV% in 44 games this season (21-21-2). The Rangers enter Wednesday's contest as +105 home underdogs against a Capitals squad that snapped a three-game losing skid on Monday, narrowly defeating the Ottawa Senators 5-4 in a shootout.
