Dupuis is expected to miss 4-5 weeks with a lower-body injury.

Dupuis has not played since November 15th of last year because of a blood clot in his lung. He has gotten over the blood clot, but will be out for at least another month with a lower-body injury. Dupuis injury allowed Daniel Sprong to crack the opening night roster.

Pascal Dupuis
Mason will be the Flyers’ opening night starter.

Mason is coming off of one of the best seasons of his career, in which he finished third in the NHL in SV% (.928) and seventh in GAA (2.25). He will get a tough test in his first start of the season when he takes on the Tampa Bay Lightning—Mason was 1-0-2 with a 2.58 GAA and .925 SV% in three preseason games.

Steve Mason
The NHL handed Raffi Torres a 41-game suspension for his illegal check to the head of Jakob Silfverberg.

The NHL’s press release read: “Torres has been suspended 41 games without pay for interference and an illegal check to the head against [Silfverberg].” Torres will forfeit over $440K as a result of the suspension. Torres had just worked himself back from two knee surgeries, but he will now have to wait half of the season before he plays again.

Donskoi could open the season on the Sharks’ top line.

A few days before the Sharks season gets underway, the 23-year-old Donskoi found himself skating on a line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski. Donkoi has spent the last six years playing with Karpat of the Finnish league before signing with the Sharks. Last season he led Karpat with 49 points (19G / 30A) in 58 games—12 more points than second on the team.

Joonas Donskoi
Greene (upper-body) is doubtful for Wednesday’s season opener.

Greene has been battling an upper-body injury for over a week and despite returning to practice on Monday, head coach Darryl Sutter has listed Greene as doubtful for Wednesday’s game against the Sharks.

Matt Greene
The Panthers are sending Lawson Crouse back to Kingston (OHL).

Crouse was the 11th overall pick this summer and the Panthers announced in mid-September that he would be getting a nine-game NHL audition to start the season, but that’s not happening anymore. The winger is heading back to Kingston, where he had 51 points (29G / 22A) in 56 games last year.

Lawson Crouse
Bernier will star the Maple Leafs' season opener on Wednesday.

Despite being slightly outplayed by James Reimer in the preseason, Mike Babcock will roll Bernier out in his Leafs’ coaching debut on Wednesday. Bernier was winless against the Habs last season, going 0-2-2 with 2.67 GAA and .908 SV%. With Babcock behind the bench, things may tighten up defensively, but Bernier doesn’t appear as if he will be in line to win too many games this season.

Jonathan Bernier
Varlamov will start the Avalanche season opening vs. Minnesota.

Varlamov posted a 1.83 GAA and .941 SV% in three preseason games and is the clear No. 1 in Colorado. He will get his 2015-16 season started against a Wild team that he was 1-4-0 with a 2.71 GAA and .926 SV% against last season. The 27-year-old comes in with a career 2.55 GAA and .918 SV%.

Semyon Varlamov
Ramo will start the Flames home opener on Wednesday.

Ramo posted the worst numbers of the Flames three goalies in the preseason, going 1-1-0 with a 1.88 GAA and .941 SV%. Those are strong numbers, but on paper he was outplayed by Jonas Hiller and Joni Ortio, but that doesn’t appear to matter. Ramo had a 2.60 GAA and .912 SV% last year and was victorious in his only start against the Canucks.
