Detroit Red Wings News

Gibson will start in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

With the Red Wings desperately battling to stay in playoff contention, Gibson has picked a poor time to see a decline in his play. The 32-year-old Gibson's strong 2025-26 season has arguably been the main contributor to the Red Wings' playoff optimism, but he has lost six of his last nine outings (3-5-1), posting a pedestrian 2.86 GAA and .895 SV%. The Red Wings have lost both of their meetings against the Pittsburgh Penguins this season (0-1-1), but will catch them on the tail end of a back-to-back on Tuesday.

Talbot (undisclosed) will be a game-time decision to back up John Gibson on Friday in Buffalo.

The Red Wings have a back-to-back coming up, and Head Coach Todd McLellan suggested that if Talbot is not ready to suit up, they may need Michal Postava, recently recalled from Grand Rapids (AHL), to serve as John Gibson's backup. Even so, Talbot has been used sparingly lately as the Red Wings try to stay in playoff contention, starting only one game so far this month.

With the Red Wings struggling to stay in playoff contention, they will need Gibson at his best on Friday against the Atlantic Division-leading Buffalo Sabres. The 32-year-old Gibson has been one of Detroit's most valuable players this season, but he has battled some adversity lately, allowing three or more goals in five of his last seven games (2-4-1), posting a 2.73 GAA and .898 SV%. The Red Wings enter Friday's contest as +130 road underdogs against a Sabres team on a rare two-game losing streak (0-0-2).

Detroit has recalled Michal Postava from Grand Rapids (AHL) under emergency conditions.

With Cam Talbot battling an undisclosed injury, the Red Wings have opted to recall Postava from the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL). Postava has been excellent in his first AHL season, posting a 1.86 GAA and .932 SV% in 21 games (13-6-0), but his recall is somewhat surprising given that Grand Rapids' starting goalie, Sebastian Cossa, is largely considered to be the Red Wings' goalie-of-the-future.

Detroit has signed Jacob Bernard-Docker to a two-year extension worth $1.6 million AAV ($3.2M total).

The two-year extension means the Red Wings avoid letting Bernard-Docker hit restricted free agency this summer, and will instead keep him locked up through the 2027-28 season. Bernard-Docker has appeared in 55 games for the Red Wings this season, registering zero goals and four assists.

Larkin (lower-body) took full part in warmups and is expected to return to the Red Wings lineup on Tuesday.

Larkin has been sidelined since suffering a lower-body injury on March 6th, but will return to the lineup on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators. The Red Wings have stayed afloat without Larkin, going 3-3-1, but will be eager for him to return and add some much needed offense. The 29-year-old Larkin has 55 pints (28G / 27A) in 63 games this season.

Brandsegg-Nygard has been reassigned to Grand Rapids (AHL).

Brandsegg-Nygard has played the past few games for the Red Wings, but his reassignment to Grand Rapids (AHL) indicates that Dylan Larkin (lower body) is trending towards a return to the lineup on Tuesday. The 20-year-old Brandsegg-Nygard is averaging 12:17 time-on-ice and has one assist in 12 games in his first NHL season.

Gibson will start vs. Ottawa on Tuesday.

Gibson gave up a weak goal in the third period of Saturday's disappointing 4-2 loss to the Boston Bruins, part of a 23-save performance (.885 SV%), and hopes to rebound on Tuesday in another pivotal matchup against the Ottawa Senators. The Red Wings have struggled offensively in recent weeks, battling a myriad of injuries, but Gibson has kept them afloat in most games, posting a solid 2.23 GAA and .919 SV% in 10 appearances since returning from the Olympic break (4-4-1). The Red Wings enter Tuesday's contest as -119 home favourites against a Senators team with wins in five of their last six games (5-1-0).

Sandin-Pellikka has been reassigned to Grand Rapids (AHL).

Sandin-Pellikka has not played since the Red Wings acquired Justin Faulk in a trade, spending nearly the last three weeks as a healthy scratch. The 21-year-old Sandin-Pellikka has 19 points (6G / 13A) in his first NHL season and will get a chance to see some playing time in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL).

Gibson led the Red Wings onto the ice for warmups.

Gibson stopped 32 of 33 shots in the Red Wings' massive 3-1 win over the Canadiens on Thursday. With another pivotal matchup on tap on Saturday, the Red Wings will stick with their No.1 guy vs. the Bruins. Gibson has gone 4-3-1 with a 2.12 GAA, .923 SV% and one shutout since returning from the Olympic break.
