The Wings are fortunate enough to rest their star players as their preseason roster holds plenty of depth. Last season, he scored 24 goals and 80 points over 80 games for the Wings. Expect him to produce 70-80 points over this season.

Babcock said right wing Patrick Eaves has a sore foot after blocking a shot in the first period and is day to day.

Doesn't sound too serious but he could be held out of a game or two. Last season the winger scored 13 goals and 20 points over 63 games of mostly fourth line duty. Coach Mike Babcock likes his offensive upside so, if healthy, expect a similar amount of goals.

But the NHL will have to wait. The Red Wings have a crowded roster and a preference for allowing prospects to marinate in the minors. So, Nyquist will start the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Nyquist continues his preseason tear, making the Red Wings makes some very tough decisions. Last season, this collegiate standout scored 18 goals and 51 points through 36 games with the University of Maine before playing eight games for the Grand Rapid Griffins. Although he will start the season in the AHL, keep his name in mind for the future.

PRESCOTT VALLEY - Mike Smith, who calls parts of his game "a work in progress," will be in goal when the Coyotes open the regular season Saturday night at San Jose.

LaBarbera showed flashes over his last two seasons of becoming a starting goalie but is more comfortable in the backup job. Last season he went 7-6-3 with a 3.26 GAA and .909 SV%. He should increase his games played from 17 to the 30+ range.

Smith, as the team's top free agent signing, gets the first crack at the starting goalie role. Last season he posted a .899 SV% and 2.89 GAA over 22 games with the Lightning. He should improve on his totals with coach Dave Tippett behind the bench.

Ribeiro not only led the Dallas Stars in point, he led the entire League. Last season, the Montreal native scored 19 goals and 71 points after playing all 82 games. Expect him to at least match those stats now that he's the guaranteed #1 center in Big D.

#Caps defenseman Mike Green - who took a shot off the hand in 2P vs. Chicago - is on the ice for 3P warm-ups.

Green took a shot off his hand and would have came out if the injury was serious. The Caps will need to protect their star defender if they want him to reach past totals of around 20 goals and 70 points. At this point, the injury does not sound serious at all.

“I established myself as an offensive defensemen last year but I take pride in playing an all-around game and don’t just play one end of the ice,’’ Kostka said. “Obviously, it’s always been my goal to play in the NHL.”

Kotska surviving the recent roster cuts indicates he could have made the team. Kostka led the Rochester Americans in points last season. At 25 he has little left to prove at the AHL level which could lead the team to keep him around as a spare defender.
