LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced Saturday the club has assigned forwards Jonathan Cheechoo, Adam Cracknell, Philip McRae, Anthony Peluso and Brett Sterling, defensemen Ian Cole and Mark Cundari along with goaltender Ben Bishop to the Blues’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, Peoria Rivermen.

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced Saturday that forward B.J. Crombeen suffered a left shoulder scapula fracture.

Crombeen is out indefinitely from the injury. Last season he scored seven goals and 14 points while adding 154 PIM. Expect a youngster like Ryan Reaves, Evgeni Grachev or Chris Porter to get looks in his absence.

Carl Gunnarsson and Keith Aulie also could be on the bubble.

Aulie made the team last season and formed a shutdown pairing with Dion Phaneuf. The former fourth round pick scored two goals through his first 40 games. If he remains on the roster, expect solid defensive play but close to no offense.

Mike Komisarek, a veteran who entered training camp in a fight to keep his regular spot on a deep blue line.

With an inflated contract and declining skillset Komisarek is an easy choice to be cut. Last season he scored a goal and 10 points through 75 games with the Leafs. Don't expect much in terms of production from the West Islip, New York native.

Gardiner's ever-emerging presence on the Leafs blue line has further complicated things for Ron Wilson heading into the preseason finale against Detroit on Saturday.

As one of the better defensive prospects in hockey, Gardiner could make the team and push a veteran out of a job. Last season, he scored 10 goals and 41 points in as many games with the University of Wisconsin. He could use a bit more time in the AHL after playing only 10 games with the Marlies last season.

Gudbranson will at the least get the nine games but there has to be a reason the Panthers are keeping eight defensemen in camp for now.

Look for the former third overall pick to stick with the club on a nine-game tryout. Last season he scored 12 goals and 34 points over 44 games with the Kingston Frontenacs. However, considering the team has no reason to rush their youngsters, expect another year of no fantasy impact.

The Ducks announced on Saturday that defenseman Matt Smaby will be out two to three months because of a torn ligament in his right thumb.

Smaby had a chance to make the team out of training camp but likely gives his role over to Nate Guenin. Last season the Minneapolis, Minnesota native was held pointless in his 32 games with the Lightning. His zero goals over 122 NHL games indicates he holds no fantasy hockey value.

"I haven't seen any reason to think of him differently than a good NHL defenseman," Maurice said. "There's just hasn't been a hole (in his game). So I'm almost moving to the point that you start thinking of this guy in the same way you did about Jeff Skinner last year.

Faulk seems more likely to make the team out of camp if the above quotes are any indication. Last season, at the University of Minnesota-Deluth, he scored eight goals and 33 points over 39 games. Expect him to be eased into NHL play.

With forwards Jussi Jokinen and Chad LaRose sitting out tonight's exhibition game in Nashville with minor injuries, the Canes will recall forward Drayson Bowman from the Charlotte Checkers (AHL).

Bowman should make the team at some point this season and could be viewed as the top call-up.

Staal is practicing today in Hartford. He’ll go through a workout again today and we’ll see how he feels in the next day or so after the workout. It’s day to day as far as the information he gives up. There’s not much as far as an update. He is practicing. It’s his second day practicing. It’s encouraging that he’s on the ice.

The Rangers remain hopeful Staal will join them in Europe. Last season, he scored seven goals and 29 points -- the latter as a career high. Expect similar production when factoring in games missed, but don't expect any sort of offensive outburst.

Sauer skated yesterday, he moved the puck yesterday. He’s still sore. We think with another day off…he will not play in tomorrow’s game (in Slovakia). It’s day to day with him. We think he’s getting better. We want to get him completely better before we put him in.

Sauer looked healthy earlier in the preseason but with is injury history the Rangers will play it safe. Last season he scored three goals and 15 points over 76 games with the team. He won't help out your fantasy hockey team as much as help the Rangers keep the puck out of the net.
