Blue Jackets’ Sean Monahan to return against Sharks, Mason Marchment a game-time decision
The Columbus Blue Jackets will welcome back one veteran, but could be losing another.
Head coach Dean Evason revealed that center Sean Monahan will play in Tuesday’s game against the San Jose Sharks after missing the team’s last four games due to maintenance. Meanwhile, winger Mason Marchment re-aggravated a lower-body injury during morning skate, making him a game-time decision for Tuesday’s game .

In 37 games this season, Monahan has five goals and 14 assists for 19 points. He is currently in the second season of a five-year, $27.5 million deal with Columbus. Last season, the Brampton, Ontario native put up 19 goals and 38 assists for 57 points in 54 games.
Monahan, 31, was drafted sixth overall by the Calgary Flames in 2013. After nine up-and-down seasons in Calgary, he has played with the Montreal Canadiens, Winnipeg Jets, and now the Blue Jackets.
Columbus traded for Marchment on December 19th, sending a 2027 second-round draft pick and a 2026 fourth-round draft pick to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for the power forward.
Marchment, 30, missed a couple games in late October with a lower-body injury while with Seattle, so it’s possible that his current issue is a re-aggravation of that injury.
The Uxbridge, Ontario native has rewarded Columbus with strong play since coming over in the trade. In seven games with the Blue Jackets, he has five goals and two assists for seven points. In his 29 games with the Kraken prior to the trade, he had four goals and nine assists for 13 points.
Marchment was never drafted by an NHL team, so after a short two-year career in the OHL, he signed an AHL contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2016. After three-plus seasons in Toronto’s organization, playing mostly with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies and winning the Calder Cup in 2018 as an AHL champion, Marchment was traded to the Florida Panthers in February of 2020 for forward Denis Malgin.
In Florida, Marchment became a full-time NHLer. In 87 games over two seasons with the Panthers, he registered 20 goals and 37 assists for 57 points.
Ahead of the 2022-23 season, Marchment signed a four-year, $18 million deal with the Dallas Stars. He spent three seasons in Dallas, including a career-best 2023-24 campaign of 22 goals and 31 assists for 53 points in 81 games, before getting traded to Seattle for two draft picks.
After Tuesday’s game in San Jose, Columbus will continue their four-game road trip by playing the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.
