Some unwelcome news in Ohio’s capital.

On Wednesday, the Columbus Blue Jackets announced that forward Mason Marchment has been placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. In response, the team has called up forward Mikael Pyyhtia from its American Hockey League affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters.

Marchment’s placement on IR is retroactive to his last appearance on Jan. 4 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Blue Jackets stated that game was when the 30-year-old suffered the injury. Yet, it was initially reported that Marchment was absent from the team’s game on Tuesday against the San Jose Sharks due to a lower-body injury.

Nevertheless, Columbus notes that Marchment is considered week-to-week. Per the league’s IR rules, he won’t be eligible to return to the lineup until Jan. 13, when the Blue Jackets welcome the Calgary Flames to town.

Marchment has only started to get settled into his new digs. The Blue Jackets acquired the Uxbridge, Ont. native from the Seattle Kraken last month for a pair of draft picks. In his first seven games with the Jackets, he has managed to score five goals and two assists for seven points. In 36 total games this year, he has notched nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points, with an even plus/minus while averaging over 17 minutes of ice time.

Pyythia has yet to play in an NHL game this season, as he has spent the first half of the 2025-26 campaign in Cleveland. In 23 games, he has potted seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points. The 24-year-old has appeared in 66 regular-season games with Columbus, scoring four goals and six assists for 10 points.

The Blue Jackets (18-17-7) sit last in the Eastern Conference, six points back of a Wild Card spot.
