NYR claim Tye Kartye
Kartye was one of two players placed on the wire on Thursday. While some thought the 24-year-old might be on his way down to the American Hockey League, others believed that the youngster could be picked up a week before the trade deadline.
Kartye has been in and out of the Kraken’s lineup this season. He has appeared in 40 of the Kraken’s 57 games thus far, having scored three goals and five assists for eight points. He scored on Feb. 3 against the Anaheim Ducks, Seattle’s second-to-last game before the Olympic break. Kartye has a plus/minus of -6 so far this year, averaging 10:42 of ice time per game.
The undrafted forward first came to the Kraken in 2022 after a solid junior career with the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League. While Kartye spent most of his rookie season with the Kraken’s primary affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, he joined Seattle for the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, scoring five points in 10 games.
He’s in the first year of his two-year contract, signed this past July, with the deal carrying a cap hit of $1.25 million through the 2026-27 campaign.
In 180 regular-season games in the NHL, the Kingston, Ont. native has scored 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points.
The other player who was put on waivers on Thursday, St. Louis Blues forward Mathieu Joseph, cleared. He has been assigned to the Blues’ top farm team, the Springfield Thunderbirds. It will be the first time since the 2019-20 season that Joseph will be in the AHL.
The Rangers (22-29-7) are last in the Eastern Conference, 20 points back of a Wild Card spot. The Kraken (27-22-9) are fourth in the Pacific Division, holding the second WC spot in the West.
