A young defender has found a new home once again.

On Wednesday, PWHL Las Vegas announced that the team has signed defender Megan Carter to a two-year contract, which will carry through the 2027-28 season.

Carter is the first player Las Vegas has signed in Phase 3 of the PWHL Expansion Player Distribution Process, and sixth overall. She joins fellow blueliners Erin Ambrose, Mae Batherson and Kendall Cooper, as well as forwards Hayley Scamurra and Hilary Knight, as the new team’s first batch of signings. However, it’s expected that Knight will be traded to Detroit ahead of the 2026 PWHL Draft next week.

Las Vegas will be Carter’s third team in her young PWHL career. She was taken by the Toronto Sceptres in the second round, 12th overall, of the 2024 draft. After one injury-riddled season, she was left unprotected during the expansion process and was picked by 11th in last year’s expansion draft by the Seattle Torrent. In 30 games with a Torrent team that ended up finishing with the worst record in league history, Carter posted a goal and four assists for five points in 30 games, registering a plus/minus of -4 while averaging 17:17 of ice time per game.

The Milton, Ont. native’s career got off to a slow start. Prior to her rookie season, she suffered a lower-body injury that sidelined her until late January. She ended up posting an assist in 19 games in 2024-25, going pointless in the Sceptres’ semifinal series against the Minnesota Frost.

Carter has six points in 49 regular-season games in the PWHL, with a career -2 rating.

Prior to turning pro, Carter had a solid career at Northeastern University, in which she played a part in three Women’s Frozen Four appearances for the Huskies. She also won gold with Canada at the 2019 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship.

Las Vegas can add two more players in Phase 3 of the expansion process, which is scheduled to end on June 12 at 3 p.m. ET.
