Mayfield appeared in the last four games, but Thomas Hickey will take his spot in the lineup tonight vs. the Hurricanes. Mayfield has had a solid start to the season, registering four points (2G / 2A), 16 shots and 16 blocks in 12 games, but is the victim of a numbers game tonight.

The Maple Leafs have recalled Nikita Soshnikov from Toronto (AHL).

Soshnikov had to be recalled today by the latest or he was eligible to return to the KHL according to a clause in his contract. The 24-year-old also earned a call-up by recording five goals and seven assists (12 points) in 14 games with the Marlies. Soshnikov has seven goals and seven assists (14 points) in 67 career games with the Maple Leafs.

Schneider will start Saturday vs. the Panthers.

Howard stopped 26 of 28 shots in the Red Wings win in Vancouver on Monday. Petr Mrazek struggled in Calgary on Thursday, so they’ll come back to Howard tonight vs. the Blue Jackets. The Red Wings have barely played at home so far this season—but Howard is 2-2-0 with a 3.01 GAA and .911 SV% in his first four starts at Little Caesars Arena.

Varlamov will start vs. the Senators in Sweden on Friday.

Varlamov allowed four goals on 37 shots in Colorado’s win in Philadelphia last Saturday. Varlamov was given the following night off so he is well rested to kick-off the NHL’s Global Series today in Sweden. Varlamov has won three of his last four starts despite posting an ugly 4.17 GAA and .890 SV%.

Schneider allowed two goals on 37 shots in the Devils’ loss to St. Louis on Tuesday. Schneider has now dropped his last two starts, including a game in Edmonton, but he gets another crack at them tonight on home ice. Tonight he faces a Flyers team that has lost four of their last six (2-3-1) while averaging just 2.50 goals per game.
