New York Islanders News

Varlamov will start Friday vs. the Jets.

Varlamov allowed five goals on 25 shots in Colorado’s loss in St. Louis on Sunday. Calvin Pickard started on Tuesday, but Varly will go tonight vs. the Jets. The veteran netminder has struggled recently, losing his last five starts while posting a 4.32 GAA and .858 SV%. Varlamov is a risky option on Friday, with the Jets in town—they’re tied for eighth in the NHL in scoring (3.00 G/PG).

Schneider will start Saturday vs. the Sabres.

Schneider allowed two goals on 33 shots in the Devils’ win over the Hurricanes on Tuesday. Keith Kinkaid started the first game of the Devils-Sabres home-and-home, so Schneider will get the call tonight. The 30-year-old netminder has been unbeatable at the Prudential Center, going 5-0-0 with a 1.57 GAA and .947 SV% in his first five starts on home-ice.

The Islanders have sent Mathew Barzal to Seattle (WHL).

Barzal served as a healthy scratch for the last six games and only appeared in two games after cracking the roster out of training camp. The Islanders never really gave Barzal a chance, so he returns to Seattle, where he had 88 points (27G / 61A) in 58 games a season ago.

Schneider will get the nod Tuesday vs. Carolina.

Schneider allowed four goals on 35 shots in the Devils’ loss in Tampa Bay on Saturday. Keith Kinkaid started on Sunday, but they’ll go back to Schneider tonight vs. the Hurricanes. Schneider has lost his last two starts while allowed a combined four goals 66 shots (.879 SV%). Despite a few rough games, Schneider remains a high-end option tonight vs. Carolina.

The Coyotes have recalled Anthony DeAngelo from Tucson (AHL).

DeAngelo, 21, was acquired from Tampa Bay this summer and has had a great start to the year with Tucson, posting seven points (1G / 6A) in eight games. The former first round pick (19th overall in 2014) has never appeared in an NHL game, but could make his NHL debut this week.

Tony DeAngelo
The Islanders have recalled Adam Pelech from Bridgeport (AHL).

Pelech, 22, has registered two assists in nine career NHL games (all in 2015-16) and this marks his first call-up of 2016-17. The 2012 third round pick (65th overall) has been recalled because Travis Hamonic is expected to miss one month with a broken arm. Pelech, who has four points (1G / 3A) in 10 games with Bridgeport this season, is expected to make his season debut on Monday.

Schneider will start Saturday in Tampa Bay.

Schneider allowed four goals on 31 shots in the Devils’ loss in Florida on Thursday. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Schneider, who has won four of his first eight starts while posting a 2.11 GAA and .933 SV%. Tonight he will take on the Lightning for the third time already—he has gone 1-1-0 with a 2.03 GAA and .940 SV% in the first two meetings.

Schneider will start Thursday in Florida.

Schneider stopped 32 of 33 shots in the Devils’ win over the Lightning last Saturday. The Devils have had the last four days off, so Schneider will start his eighth game tonight in Florida. He finished October with a 1.86 GAA and .941 SV%, which both rank in the top 10 in the NHL. Schneider comes in on a three game winning streak and makes for a solid start tonight.

Varlamov will start Thursday in Chicago.

Varlamov surrendered five goals on 36 shots in Colorado’s loss to the Predators on Tuesday. Varlamov has lost his last three starts while posting a 3.71 GAA and .884 SV% and things don’t get any easier tonight in Chicago. The Blackhawks are 6-3-1 and rank third in the NHL in scoring with 3.50 goals per game. There are better options out there tonight.

The Maple Leafs have recalled Nikita Soshnikov from Toronto (AHL).

Soshnikov, 23, has picked up three points (1G / 2A) in six games with the Toronto Marlies this season. There’s no word whether or not Soshnikov will make his NHL season debut on Tuesday. The Russian winger has five points (2G / 3A) in 11 games with the Maple Leafs last season.

Nikita Soshnikov
Varlamov will start Tuesday vs. the Predators.

Varlamov allowed one goal on 21 shots in Colorado’s 1-0 loss to the Jets last Friday. Varlamov was inconsistent in October, finishing the month at 2-3-0 with a 2.82 GAA and .909 SV%. On Tuesday he will take on a Nashville team that is off to a sluggish start to 2016-17. The Predators are 2-5-1 and surprisingly rank 24th in the NHL in scoring (2.38 G/PG).

Fasching left Sunday’s game with a groin injury and did not return.

Fasching played just one shift before leaving Sunday’s game vs. the Jets. Head coach Dan Bylsma didn’t have an update on Fasching after the game, but said they will likely have another forward at practice on Monday, which suggests that Fasching will miss some time.

Hudson Fasching
Varlamov will start Friday vs. the Jets.

Varlamov allowed five goals on 38 shots in Colorado’s loss in Florida last Saturday. The Avalanche have had six days off, so Varlamov should be well rested for tonight’s game vs. the Jets. Varlamov has won two of his first four starts while posting a 3.25 GAA, .902 SV% and one shutout.

Semyon Varlamov
Schneider will start Saturday vs. the Lightning.

Schneider allowed three goals on 31 shots in the Devils’ win over the Coyotes on Tuesday. Keith Kinkaid got the nod last night, so Schneider will go tonight vs. the Lightning. Schneider comes into Saturday having won three of his last four while posting a 1.75 GAA and .942 SV%. He’ll be in tough against a Lightning team that has won five of their first seven.

Cory Schneider
Schneider wil start Tuesday vs. the Coyotes.

Schneider turned aside 28 of 29 shots in the Devils overtime win over the Wild on Saturday. Schneider has won two of his first five games while posting a 1.80 GAA and .943 SV%. This is exactly what we’ve come to expect out of Schneider over the years—elite splits, but a limited number of wins thanks to an anemic Devils’ offence. They’ve tallied just eight goals in front of him this season.
