The Jets took a chance on the winger, giving him a tryout as an unsigned player, and have been giving him plenty of opportunity to make his mark. He played on the first line with Andrew Ladd in last Tuesday’s pre-season opener, and he was with Alex Burmistrov and Nik Antropov on Wednesday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Pesonen has proven in the past he can score at the AHL, KHL and SM-Liiga but failed to produce in his cup of coffee with Pittsburgh. He likely fails to make the team due to a previous injury. If he ever makes the NHL, he could turn into a solid supplementary winger.

The Skinner situation is what has some Winnipeg Jets fans hoping Mark Scheifele can make the jump to the NHL after only one year in the Ontario Hockey League. Skinner says: Why not?

Scheifele continues to impress the team's brass with his near dominant outings. Scheifele scored 22 goals and 75 points in 66 games with the Barrie Colts of the OHL. If he makes the team, expect him to play a relatively prominent role on a scoring line.

That was the prevailing wisdom a few weeks back. Today, it is nearly inconceivable that Niskanen will not be in the mix when the games begin to count a week from now.

Niskanen has impressed during training camp, showing he is more-than-capable of handling a bottom pairing role. The former 28th overall pick scored 13 goals over his first two seasons before only scoring four over the last two. Should he see time in an offensive role he could return to the 6-7 goal range.

Stars captain Brenden Morrow, who has not been practicing since tweaking a knee in the preseason opener against Montreal, is skating. “He’s going to be close. It’s up to Brenden now,” said Stars coach Glen Gulutzan. “He skated [Wednesday] and said he was pretty good.” Still, Gulutzan said there is no need to rush Morrow back into preseason action with the season opener still more than a week away.

Doesn't sound like the team is overly concerned with him missing the season opener. Last season the top line left wing potted 33 goals and 56 points. Expect a similar output mixed with 60+ PIM this season if he stays healthy.

Now in his third year of professional hockey, forward Colton Sceviour feels it’s time that he starts making his case for being an NHL player. So far this preseason the 22-year-old has been doing just that.

Sceviour could contribute to the Stars as a two-way forward capable of scoring on the third line. " Last season he finished third in scoring for the Texas Stars of the AHL with 41 points (16 goals, 25 assists) in 77 games while playing in all situations, including penalty kill and power play." Not a reason to roster now but a name to keep in mind should the Stars surprise this season.

The Capitals have signed Jason Chimera to a two-year contract extension, with an annual salary cap hit of $1.75 million. The veteran winger is now under contract with Washington through the 2013-14 season.

Chimera is a very capable winger who can play anywhere between the second and fourth lines. Last season he scored 10 goals and 26 points through 81 games. Expect him to fight for his playing time over the year.

Defenseman John Erskine, who had been slow to recover from shoulder surgery, was not wearing the bright orange no-contact jersey he had been sporting all camp.

Erskine played a career high 73 games last season but failed to eclipse 100 PIM. He holds close to no fantasy value despite posting a decent plus/minus and adding PIM in the past.

Mathieu Perreault was given a day off Thursday - a "maintenance day" in hockey terms - a team spokesman said.

Definitely doesn't help his chances of making the team. The diminutive pivot showed in the past he is capable of producing, in spurts, at the NHL level but don't select him until he makes the team.

At first, it looked like great news for defenseman Dmitry Orlov, who has been more than impressive dating to rookie camp. The 20-year-old was Hershey's “most dominant defenseman” last year, coach Mark French said recently.

Sounds like Orlov makes the team in place of John Erskine. Last season, the Russian expatriate scored two goals and nine points in 19 games with the Bears. He should get a chance to play on the bottom pairing and could even chip in some points if paired with Dennis Wideman.

Wilson showed brilliance at both end of the ice in scoring the Predators first goal to tie the game 1-1, 13:52 into the opening period. On defense, he salvaged a weak break out pass from Kevin Klein at one end of the ice and then trailed David Legwand the length of the ice to put the puck in the Caps net for the tying goal.

Wilson played on the team's second line last night, forcing in a goal. Last season, the former 10th overall pick severely disappointed by scoring only 16 goals and 34 points over all 82 games. Look for him to improve in his second full season with the Preds.

Stalberg left the game in the first period with a leg injury which Quenneville described as "probably not good either." Both players will be re-evaluated on Thursday.

Doesn't sound like Stalberg will return to the lineup anytime soon. Last year he scored 12 goals and 24 points while seeing action next to Jonathan Toews. He will not need to re-earn his playing time as the team has quite stiff competition for their forward spots.

Smith was hit in the head in the open ice by the Wings' Brendan Smith, who received a match penalty.

Smith's injury somewhat frees up the logjam at forward. The winger scored a goal in six regular season games before becoming a postseason hero for the Blackhawks. Keep an eye on this situation and don't roster Smith until he proves himself healthy.

"Both played very well in camp for us," coach Dave Tippett said from Calgary, where the Coyotes play a preseason game Thursday against the Flames. "They certainly are going to be two guys who are going to make decisions very hard."

Chipchura should make the team as a fourth liner or spare forward. He suited up for 95 games over the last two seasons in Anaheim. Considering he only managed two assists last season, his fantasy hockey value is virtually nonexistent.

O'Sullivan hasn't been guaranteed a roster spot but has impressed during camp. Last season the enigmatic forward only scored two goals and eight points in 31 games, split between the Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild. The left wing did however prove he was too good for the AHL as he potted 19 goals and 48 points in 36 games with the Houston Aeros.

If he doesn’t make the Oilers’ roster — he’s in the running with Corey Potter and Taylor Chorney for the No. 7 spot — he’s only a phone call away with the American Hockey League team in Oklahoma City.

Sounds like Fedun is close to making the team. Signed after four successful seasons at Princeton University, the 23-year-old received very little press as a prospect. He should need at least a season at the AHL level.

The longest suspension served was dealt to former-Detroit Red Wing David Perron at six-games after a cross-checking penalty dealt ironically against his current team in the 2024-25 season, the Ottawa Senators. Additionally, Perron was fined $148,437.48 for his actions.
