There's plenty to talk about with Brooks Laich, but whatever minor injury caused him to leave practice Sunday and miss it altogether Monday is not one of them, according the Capitals forward.

Laich should be fully healthy but his place in the lineup is debatable. Last season the versatile forward scored 16 goals and 48 points while rotating between the second and third lines. If he is featured in a scoring role, Laich could come near 60 points.

Niemi was facing shots from the group for the first time, then left the rink.

Niemi could be ready for the season opener at this point. Last season, Niemi won 35 games while sporting a 2.38 GAA and .920 SV%. With Antero Niittymaki already out, the two options for the Sharks would be Thomas Greiss or Harri Sateri.

Going through drills, Havlat is sharing the right wing spot on the Clowe-Couture line with Ben Ferriero.

It was reported Havlat shed his no-contact jersey which indicates Havlat should be back at full strength shortly. The winger scored 22 goals and 62 points in 78 games with the Wild last season. He should be able to improve those numbers with a much improved supporting cast.

Also, Jamie Benn (groin) and Adam Burish (groin) skated on their own while the non-game group practiced this morning.

Burish was an incredibly valuable player to the Stars last season despite only eight goals and 14 points. They will continue to take it easy on him when the games don't matter. While he plays a bruising style on the ice, his PIM do not translate to fantasy hockey as he only registered 91 and 107 respectively over the past two seasons.

Also, Jamie Benn (groin) and Adam Burish (groin) skated on their own while the non-game group practiced this morning.

Benn skated for a second consecutive day which is an encouraging sign. Last season, Benn scored 22 goals and 56 points in only his second NHL season. He will be relied on to help anchor the second line this season and should play alongside leading scorer Loui Eriksson.

The second practice group of the day is on the ice now. Defenseman Anton Volchenkov is not in this group either. The Devils day his “resting.”

Move along folks, nothing to see here. Volchenkov will be protected from the rigors of the preseason after only playing 57 games last season. The A-Train is an incredibly injury prone player due to the amount of shots he block, unless your league uses that stat keep him off your team.

The longest suspension served was dealt to former-Detroit Red Wing David Perron at six-games after a cross-checking penalty dealt ironically against his current team in the 2024-25 season, the Ottawa Senators. Additionally, Perron was fined $148,437.48 for his actions.
