Thompson returned to practice on Sunday and also participated on Monday, but has been ruled out of Washington's next two games, targeting a return on Thursday against the Nashville Predators. With Charlie Lindgren (lower body) also sidelined, Clay Stevenson has stepped in as Washington's third-string goalie.

Logan Thompson (upper body) was back at practice on Monday, but has been ruled out of the team's next two games, targeting a return to the crease on Thursday. As such, third-string goalie Clay Stevenson will return to the crease on Monday against the New York Islanders. The 26-year-old Stevenson made his season debut on Saturday, his second-career NHL appearance, saving 19 of 22 shots (.864 SV%) in a 4-3 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes. The Capitals enter Monday's contest as -131 home favourites against an Islanders team whose three-game winning streak was snapped in a 4-3 loss to the Nashville Predators on Saturday.

McIlrath is expected to be a healthy scratch vs. the Islanders on Monday.

With Matt Roy (lower body) and Martin Fehervary (personal) returning to the lineup on Monday, Declan Chisholm and Dylan McIlrath will be healthy scratches. The 33-year-old McIlrath is averaging 9:11 time-on-ice and has zero points through 11 games this season.

Fehervary did not play on Saturday due to personal reasons, but he returned to practice on Monday and should be in the lineup against the New York Islanders. The 26-year-old Slovak defenseman is quietly having an impressive season, pacing for career-high production with 19 points (3G / 16A) through 55 games.

Lindgren finished Thursday’s game vs. Detroit but endured a lower-body injury during the shootout.

Lindgren seemingly suffered an injury toward the end of overtime, but stayed in the crease for the shootout, ultimately needing assistance leaving the ice after recording the victory. Already without Logan Thompson (upper body), who is day-to-day, it is unclear who will be tending the twine for the Capitals on Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Sandin (lower-body) is on the ice for warmups and is expected to play in Detroit on Thursday.

Sandin did not play on Tuesday because of a lower-body injury but appears to be good to go for Thursday's game against the Detroit Red Wings. The 25-year-old Swedish defenseman is averaging 18:48 time-on-ice and has 17 points (2G / 15A) in 47 games this season.
